Michael McGovern: Not Your Average Roofer
Michael McGovern, Columbus Roofing Owner and Leah Wolf at the Foster the Future Black Tie/All White Gala.
Michael McGovern, owner of Columbus Roofing & Construction, is far from a typical roofer, aiming to redefine the industry by positioning roofing as a strategic investment rather than just a cost. His unique perspective stems from a background in real estate, where frustrations with unreliable contractors ultimately led him to start a roofing company. He recognized that the principles of real estate investing, focused on increasing equity and value, could be directly applied to home improvements like roofing. This vision has shaped CRC into what he describes as a "financial home advisor" rather than merely a contractor.
To educate homeowners and differentiate his business, Michael authored a book titled “Homeowner Wealth”. In his book, he teaches how to build wealth through renovations without draining your savings. This book serves as a crucial tool to pre-educate potential clients, helping them understand the financial benefits of roofing before they even enter the sales process, thereby creating ideal clients. Within its pages, he introduces innovative concepts such as the "double funding model," which guides homeowners in storm-damaged areas on how to leverage both insurance payouts and financing to replace their roof without significant out-of-pocket expenses. Another key concept is the "self-funding roof program," which illustrates how a new roof can yield a substantial 71% return on investment, contributing significantly to market appreciation and overall home equity.
Beyond his business, Michael is deeply committed to philanthropy, particularly through his involvement with Foster for the Future. His charitable efforts began with the Bridges program run by his pastor, which assists foster youth as they age out of the foster system at 18. Michael not only mentors these kids and helps them with life skills, but also holds an annual gala to raise money to help these kids.
He recounts a success story of a foster youth who, through his mentorship, received a work program to help out at CRC. The challenge was the boy had no car. It was up to him to figure out how to get to and from work each day. Recognizing this, Michael was able to hire him full-time and buy him a car from funds that they raised through their event.
Michael views his role as a "springboard," providing the necessary support for these young individuals to launch into their next phase of life. Michael said he received a call, and the young man has decided to enlist in the service to serve our country.
