Musch Family Bonds With Cool Cat
Where are you most likely to encounter a Russian with the moniker of a knight of the British Empire? If you guessed a James Bond film, that’s not a bad choice. The second most likely place? The home of Mindy and Kyle Musch.
The Musch family maintains the home base of operations for one domestic shorthair (probably Russian blue) cat who goes by the name of Sir Ashton Martin Grey. Don’t call him Earl. He is not to be trifled with.
Sir Ashton came to the Musches courtesy of Columbus Humane. “Rudy was his name, and he was 8 weeks old,” Mindy recalls. “Love at first sight.” Now 14 years old, that cute kitty still captivates his human family and keeps an eye on his domain.
As an indoor/outdoor cat, Sir Ashton enjoys a daily stroll around the perimeter of the house and a trip to the neighborhood pond. “He’s the resident cul-de-sac greeter,” during the warm-weather months, says the Musches. In the winter, he’s content to lounge by the fire or wherever his people pals are hanging out.
As an only pet, Sir Ashton isn’t extremely social with other animals. The neighbor’s dog knows him, and they trade glances. Otherwise, he occasionally engages with the local deer population. “He’s more of a doe guy.”
More than anything, he’s a Musch guy. “He’s our best friend and fur baby,” says Mindy. “Ash brings us joy, companionship and entertainment.” He also provides some protection. “One day I heard a noise outside and saw a fox running out of the tall grasses,” Mindy remembers. “And not one second behind was Ash.” That’s a brave cat!
Ash is well taken care of for his troubles. “We love spoiling him and make a big deal about his birthday,” says Kyle. He dons a bowtie for the occasion and enjoys a fishcake served on a special dish.
Sir Ashton enjoys his share of life’s pleasures at other times as well. “He’s a treat monger,” says Kyle. “He comes running to the door when bacon is cooking.” Although a little unbefitting a cat of his name, he is also a bit of a beggar. In terms of more traditional cat fare, Sir Ashton is fond of freeze-dried salmon.
Sir Ashton may beg for treats, but he’s not a total freeloader. He can do tricks including shake, twirl, high-five, sit, and lay down. He’s also a seasoned traveler. They decided as a kitten to get him used to riding for long car rides to visit family. His preferred car spot is on his blanket on the center armrest and leaning on the driver’s arm.
“He’s the baby,” they say. To channel an early James Bond film—nobody does it better.
