A Day of Fishing, Fun and Kindness

Isaac and Henry enjoy the Kona Ice.

On August 9th, neighbors gathered at Holbrook Pond for the Ninth Annual Fishing Derby, a beloved summer tradition for the children of Muirfield Village. Parents and grandparents helped the young anglers with tackle, bobbers and measuring devices provided by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, while music—including Jimmy Buffett’s “Fins” and the JAWS theme—filled the afternoon. The Fire Truck and Kona Ice Truck added to the festive summer atmosphere.

The fish, however, were not particularly cooperative. As I walked around the pond taking pictures, I witnessed a moment that captured the true spirit of our neighborhood.  A young fisherman proudly reeled in his catch while a nearby family watched with envy. Noticing his fellow competitor struggling, he generously offered, “You may use my beef jerky” as bait.

That simple gesture of kindness said so much about this young man, his family and the community that helped shape him. I was proud to be his neighbor. He brought to life the words of Clare Pooley in The Authenticity Project: “In a world where you can be anything, be kind.”

Ray DiRossi announced the winners and presented the trophies:
  • Ages 5 and under: Alaya Schmidt — largest and most fish
  • Ages 6–8: Quinn Larson — largest fish; Carter Mason — most fish
  • Ages 13–17: Ben Armitage — largest and most fish
  • Ages 18+: Brittany Horvath — largest and most fish
Our grand champions were Ben Armitage, with a remarkable 26.5-inch fish, and Carter Mason, who caught an impressive 20 fish. Congratulations to all the winners!

As the Fire Trucks and Kona Ice Truck departed and families headed home, another successful Fishing Derby came to an end. More than a fishing contest, it was a simple summer tradition filled with fun, memories and a reminder that kindness is often the greatest prize of all.
