Living Life Full Tilt

The Kogelmann family embraces life in Murrysville with a love of adventure, family fun, community involvement, and making memories together.

If you ever wonder what happens when you combine two adventurous parents, two energetic boys, four furry friends and a serious love of the outdoors, look no further than the Kogelmann family!

Mark and Sarajane Kogelmann have called Murrysville home for eight years, and in that time, they have embraced the community with both feet. For them, Murrysville is not simply where they live. It is where they have built friendships, raised their boys and discovered that showing up and getting involved is one of the best ways to feel at home.

Mark and Sarajane have been married for 10 years. They met in State College, Pennsylvania, and now enjoy life with their sons, Wolfgang Von, known as Wolf, age 10, and Sebastian, or Bash, age 8. The boys attend Franklin Regional Intermediate and have already developed quite the impressive list of interests.

Wolf and Bash play soccer with the Pittsburgh Independent Football Club and are black belts at Grand Master Michael Caruso ATA Taekwondo. When they aren't on the soccer field or practicing martial arts, you'll likely find them biking, hiking, swimming, skiing, creating art, writing, playing chess or diving into a good book. They also enjoy history, social studies and current events, with the "Greeking Out" podcast being a family favorite.

Clearly, the apple didn't fall far from the adventure tree.

Mark is a triathlete who completed his first Ironman 70.3 this summer and is already training for a full Ironman. He is also a freeride and backcountry skier, mountaineer, skateboarder and mountain biker. His adventures have taken him around the world, including leading first descents in the Himalayas and South America. Back home, he puts his love of sports to work as a soccer coach and volunteer.

Mark is a Level 100 certified alpine freestyle coach and a certified U.S. Soccer coach for children. He also serves as Vice President of Sponsorship on the nonprofit board of directors for the Murrysville Area Soccer Association.

Sarajane is equally energetic, although her adventures come in a slightly different package. She enjoys lifting, biking, interior design, DIY home projects, antiquing and thrifting. She is also an enthusiastic skier who has explored mountains throughout Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Oregon, California and Washington. When she's not on the slopes, she enjoys volunteering, fundraising and finding creative ways to make a difference.

Together, the family loves being outside. Favorite activities include skiing, running and biking along the Westmoreland Heritage Trail, swimming at the Murrysville Swim Club, traveling, playing games, enjoying movies on the deck, listening to music and dancing. They also love spending time at Gram and Pap's cabin.

And then there are the pets.

The Kogelmann home includes Brutus, a Saint Bernard; Gus, an apple-headed Chihuahua; and cats Ace and Bugsly. But Sarajane's animal-loving heart doesn't stop there. She also looks after neighborhood strays, deer and pretty much any living creature that happens to wander into her orbit.

When everyone works up an appetite, the family favorite is homemade lasagna. As for the secret family recipes? Those are apparently important enough to require maximum security. Wolfy's and Sarajane's recipes are kept in the family safe!

Sarajane also has some serious Murrysville roots. Her maiden name is Remaley, and her family has lived in the area for many generations. Mark, on the other hand, jokingly considers himself "a tourist."

After eight years, we'd say he's officially earned local status.

The Kogelmanns say what they love most about Murrysville is its sense of community. They've found that some of their best friendships have come from simply getting involved, whether through youth sports, volunteering, local events, fundraisers or neighborhood gatherings.

They believe Murrysville is special because of its people. Different backgrounds, interests and experiences come together here, creating a community where neighbors support one another and families have countless opportunities to connect.

That same spirit is why they appreciate Stroll Murrysville. One person in particular holds a special place in their hearts: Barb. She was one of the first people they met after moving to Murrysville and has since become a cherished friend. They love that Stroll introduces neighbors, celebrates local businesses and organizations and shares the stories that make the community feel like a family.

The Kogelmanns believe that good fortune comes with a responsibility to give back. Through coaching, volunteering, fundraising, mentoring and supporting local organizations, they strive to make a positive impact wherever they can.

For this family, life in Murrysville is about staying active, trying new things, lending a hand and, most importantly, enjoying the ride together.

And with this crew, we're guessing the ride will never be boring!
