Juanita moved into Hallmark House in May 2024.
Can you share a memorable experience or story from your life?
Juanita grew up in Pound, Va. After graduation, she began working in Roanoke, VA for Yale Locks. She would take the bus from Pound to Roanoke for her job. She stepped onto the bus one day only to find there was one seat left. She ended up sharing the seat with the man who ended up being her husband and life-long love. His name was Herb.
Are there any particular accomplishments or achievements that you are proud of?
Juanita is most proud of her family. She has two children, two grandchildren, and a great-grandchild on the way. Juanita was a graduate of Clinch Valley College where she earned her degree in teaching. Juanita taught in McRoberts, Kentucky, and also was a principal in that same district. Juanita taught for twenty years. She also coached the academic team in McRoberts where her team won many awards.
Are there any life lessons or values that you would like to pass on to future generations?
Juanita has always had a great love for education and valued it greatly. Her faith was also very important to her. Her husband was a teacher for many years and then became a pastor. She was the choir leader in her church for many years. Juanita's love for education and her faith would be the two most important things that she would want to pass on to future generations.
How do you stay mentally and physically active?
Juanita has always loved to do yardwork and gardening. She also loved going to the gym and lifting weights. Staying physically active has always been a priority in Jaunita's daily routine. When the Fitbit first came out, Juanita bought one and loved it. It quickly became a competition between her family members of who would get the most steps in one given day. Juanita seemed to always win the award of the family step competition. Juanita has also always loved art, adult coloring, and singing with her sisters.
How have your interests or hobbies evolved over the years? Are there any new activities you have taken up recently?
Gardening and church have always been a huge part of her life. Juanita has also always been a big shopper and always encouraged her daughter to "buy more." In her first year of being married, her husband bought her an axe handle for Christmas. He was very practical and bought that because it was something they needed. After that Christmas, Juanita started buying her gifts. In later years, Juanita took up adult coloring and still loves to do that today.
Is there anything else that you would like to share?
Juanita has always been a doer. She was very active in her church and always took care of things behind the scenes. It didn't matter if it was a church event or a family reunion, Juanita always made sure every detail was taken care of. Her love for others was obvious in her attention to every detail. Juanita always left her quiet thumbprint in everything she was a part of and continues to leave them in the hearts of her family and friends.
