From Norton Commons to Oxmoor Estate

Gearing Up for Bourbon Heritage Month

For most of the country, August is the last gasp of summer. For bourbon lovers, it's the calm before the celebration.
September is National Bourbon Heritage Month, and the story begins in August. On August 2, 2007, Kentucky's Senator Jim Bunning led the United States Senate in passing a resolution declaring September a national month of recognition for bourbon. The resolution honored bourbon as "America's Native Spirit" and recognized Kentucky's essential role in shaping it.
The 2007 resolution built on Congress's 1964 declaration of bourbon as America's distinctive product and gave the spirit a month of its own.
Did you know? There's a bourbon named in his honor. The Jim Bunning Release, Batch #7 from Kentucky Senator Bourbon, is an 8.5-year-old small-batch Kentucky straight bourbon bottled at 107 proof. Every release in the line is named for a U.S. Senator from Kentucky and aged at least six years, the exact length of a Senate term. Bunning's batch pays tribute to the late senator and Baseball Hall of Famer who gave September its bourbon month.
So consider August your invitation. Dust off a bottle, visit a distillery or bourbon heritage site, and mark your calendar for September.
