Meet Your Neighbors: The Bowers Family

Longtime residents John and Charlotte Bowers share a love for family, community, and the neighborhood they have proudly called home for more than 23 years.

When Charlotte and John first moved into The Lakes more than 23 years ago, they could not have imagined all the memories that would unfold there. As the second family to build a home in the neighborhood, they watched the community grow around them while building a life centered on faith, family, friendship, and service.
Originally from Vestavia Hills, just outside Birmingham, both Charlotte and John eventually found their way to Tuscaloosa. Their journey included a brief move away before returning to the city they loved. After Charlotte opened her Allstate agency, the decision to stay became clear.
Today, their home stands as more than just a house. It is the place where their two sons grew up, where countless family holidays have been celebrated, and where generations continue to gather around the table.
The couple's story began long before careers, children, and homeownership. They met in high school while participating in the band. Charlotte, whose mother is German, had spent the summer traveling in Germany and visiting family. Because she missed much of the band's summer practice schedule, she returned as a substitute marcher and happened to be placed beside John.
What began as a simple high school friendship eventually became a lifelong partnership. Thirty-six years later, they continue to approach life as a team.
Both Charlotte and John are proud graduates of The University of Alabama. John earned a degree in accounting and now works as a CPA and auditor with Steve Richardson and Company. Charlotte received her undergraduate degree in education from Alabama before later earning her MBA from the University of North Carolina Greensboro after the couple relocated to North Carolina early in their marriage.
Charlotte eventually found her calling as a business owner and community advocate. For the past 16 years, she has owned and operated her Allstate agency near Southern Ale House and Bryant Bank. Helping families protect what matters most has allowed her to serve the community she loves while building meaningful relationships throughout Tuscaloosa.
Their greatest source of pride, however, is their family.
Their sons, Jackson and Davis, both grew up in The Lakes and attended Northridge High School. The neighborhood provided the backdrop for childhood adventures, school years, and family traditions that continue to shape them today.
Jackson earned his business degree from The University of Alabama and recently celebrated a major milestone when he married his wife, Claire, at TPC Sawgrass. The couple now lives in Dallas, Texas, where both work in sales.
Davis pursued engineering at Letourneau University in Texas and now works as an engineer in the Mobile area. He and his wife, Maryam, have been married for three years. Maryam will soon graduate and begin her career as a physician assistant specializing in pediatrics.
Charlotte and John feel especially grateful not only for the men their sons have become, but also for the women who have joined their family.
They often describe themselves as blessed to have gained two wonderful daughters-in-law.
At home, two four-legged family members keep life entertaining.
Lily, a long-haired dachshund, has fully embraced her role as the queen of the household. Alongside her is Hap, a rescue Chihuahua mix. Despite their different personalities, the two dogs are inseparable companions who bring plenty of joy to daily life.
When they are not spending time with family, Charlotte and John enjoy hobbies that reflect their personalities and interests.
John is a devoted follower of Alabama athletics and enjoys keeping up with football, basketball, softball, and baseball. Charlotte finds happiness in cooking and gardening. Over the years, she has transformed their backyard into a colorful retreat filled with flowers and seasonal blooms.
The couple also enjoys gathering with church friends on Sunday afternoons to play Rook, a beloved card game that has become a treasured tradition. The group rotates homes, creating opportunities for friendship and fellowship throughout the year.
Family gatherings remain one of the most important parts of life for the couple. With John's father and Charlotte's parents living locally, their home naturally serves as the central gathering place for holidays and celebrations. Their sons and extended family often return to Tuscaloosa, filling the house with conversation, laughter, and the aroma of Charlotte's home cooking.
While they enjoy traveling and visiting family, many of their favorite places can be found right here in Tuscaloosa. They enjoy dining at The University Club, cheering on Alabama athletics, and grabbing a quick meal at The Globe. They also appreciate the natural beauty surrounding their neighborhood, particularly nearby Lake Nicol, where they enjoy hiking and paddle boarding.
One of the things they value most about The Lakes is its strong sense of community. They enjoy neighborhood events organized by the homeowners association and appreciate the opportunity to connect with neighbors while walking through the community.
Giving back has always been an important part of their family's values. Over the years, they have supported organizations including United Way of West Alabama, UCP, Patti's Pantry, and Tuscaloosa Metro Animal Shelter. They are also longtime members of First Presbyterian Church of Tuscaloosa, where faith continues to play a central role in their lives.
When asked about their favorite memory in the neighborhood, Charlotte immediately thought back to the days when Jackson and Davis were young boys exploring the outdoors around the neighborhood pond.
The boys loved fishing there, spending countless hours casting lines and searching for adventure. One particular day has become a family favorite.
While walking around the pond path with her sons, Davis announced that he was going to catch one of the small killdeer birds running through the grass. Charlotte thought little of it and never imagined he would actually succeed. Moments later, to everyone's surprise, Davis proudly held the bird in his hands. Charlotte's reaction was immediate as she quickly instructed him to put it back down.
Years later, the story still brings smiles and laughter whenever the family reminisces about childhood adventures.
For Charlotte and John, life in The Lakes has never been just about a place to live. It has been the setting for a marriage that has endured for 36 years, the neighborhood where they raised two sons, and the community where lifelong friendships have been formed.
As their family continues to grow and new chapters unfold, their home remains exactly what it has always been: a welcoming place filled with faith, love, laughter, and the people who matter most.
