Join Bryan and Shelly Johnson in Their Mission to Create a Gathering Place for All
Bringing a Little Bit of Louisiana to East Texas, One Cup at a Time

Bryan and Shelly Johnson are Louisiana natives with over thirty years of healthcare experience. More than twenty-five years ago, they moved to East Texas, and made it their home, but they’re not in healthcare anymore. There’s a reason hospitals and restaurants use the same word: hospitality. For the Johnsons and their business, PJ’s Coffee of New Orleans, it relates to hospitality. It’s about taking care of people, and it’s something they’ve been doing for a long time. “In today’s fast-paced world, we believe in the importance of creating a space where people can connect, relax, and savor the simple joys of good coffee and great conversation,” Bryan and Shelly say.
PJ’s Coffee of New Orleans was founded in 1978 by Phyllis Jordan, a pioneer in the coffee industry who embraced high-quality beans, superior roasting methods, and a pure passion for the art of coffee-making. Her dedication to coffee quality remains the foundation of PJ’s roasting methods, which takes place blocks from New Orleans’ famous French Quarter. “As Louisiana natives and passionate coffee lovers, we wanted to bring a little taste of our home state to our East Texas community,” they share. “We’ve always loved the warm, inviting atmosphere of a coffee shop—where friends and family can come together, slow down, and truly enjoy each other’s company.”
PJ’s Coffee utilizes only the best quality arabica coffee beans sourced from around the world. Roast Master Felton Jones, who alone has over twenty-five years of experience with PJ’s Coffee, produces exceptionally roasted coffee beans in small batches. PJ’s Coffee offers specialty beverages, food, drive-thru and mobile ordering, catering, retail sales, and a loyalty program, all while emphasizing community engagement. They’re distinguished by their authentic Louisiana heritage, shown through signature southern flavors and a unique, small-batch, direct-fire roasting process that enhances the top 1% of Arabica beans. They also pioneered cold brew and offer signature Chicory Coffee, a New Orleans tradition, setting them apart from typical coffee chains with a focus on quality and culture.
In its essence, PJ’s Coffee of New Orleans aims to be more than a coffee shop; it’s a community, “a gathering space that fosters community connections and gives back in meaningful ways.” Bryan and Shelly proudly contribute to their East Texas community by actively supporting and sponsoring local events, all the while sharing an authentic taste of New Orleans. While the Tyler coffee scene is bustling, Bryan and Shelly want residents to know that they are open, and ready to be more than your local go-to coffee dive; they invite everyone to their warm, soothing space that is unique to the community. “Our vision for the future of our coffee shop is to be the place where people naturally gather; a welcoming spot that captures the charm of a classic small-town coffee shop,” the Johnsons share. “We want to create an inviting atmosphere where customers feel at home and are treated like family.” Coffee shops are natural gathering places in every community, and PJ’s Coffee of New Orleans, with Bryan and Shelly’s decades of hospitable experience, introduces a fresh and distinct coffee experience to this community.
