Focused on the Next Inning
Inspired by years of “College GameDay” traditions with his father, Cody Pinkerton is chasing his dream of calling the game.
Cody Wayne Pinkerton, or "Pinky," is graduating from Tyler Legacy High School. He is the son of Amy and Mike Pinkerton and the brother of Henry Pinkerton.
Cody moved to Tyler four years ago and has played baseball for Tyler Legacy for four years. He is a member of the student media program, where he gained experience calling basketball games and Tyler Junior College football games. “My favorite memory was sweeping Rockwall-Heath in baseball my junior year,” Cody says. “It was the first time in school history, and it was great to experience that with my brothers on the team.”
Cody gives a special shout-out to Brady Pollard, whom Cody says was one of the “amazing people” who welcomed him to Tyler and has been “an amazing friend through the years.” Maintaining balance in high school takes the support of friends as well as effective time management. Cody says he balanced high school life by “creating equal time for all of them every day,” carving out specific time to focus on one task at a time. This balance helped Cody earn a Tyler Rotary Club award in 2021.
“Be where your feet are.” That is what Cody would advise his freshman self. He says that during his freshman year, he was focused on wanting to be back in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, but he would tell his younger self to stay present. “Focus on the people you have around you and enjoy it,” he says.
After graduation, Cody plans to attend the University of Kansas, where he will major in journalism with a focus on broadcasting. Cody and his father, Mike, have been doing "College GameDay" style activities since Cody was little. “Since then, I have always wanted to be in the booth calling games,” he says. He hopes to use the skills he will learn to paint a picture in the minds of his listeners so they feel like they are at the game with him.
