Giving Thanks & Embracing Snowbird Season

As the colder months settle in here in Michigan, many of us find ourselves reflecting on what we’re thankful for—family, friends, and the simple joys of life in our beautiful state. Winter in Michigan is magical for those who love the snow, crisp air, and holiday charm. But for others, the pull of warmer days and sunny skies grows stronger as the snow piles higher.

That’s where snowbird season comes in. For many Michiganders, the best of both worlds means enjoying our breathtaking summers and colorful autumns at home, then escaping the frigid months to relax under palm trees elsewhere. Florida and Arizona remain two of the most popular destinations, but other states like Texas, the Carolinas, Nevada, and even parts of California have become favorites for Michiganders seeking sunshine. Whether you rent through Airbnb or VRBO, or decide it’s finally time to invest in a second home, the snowbird lifestyle opens the door to sunshine-filled memories all year round.

I’ve experienced this balance firsthand. My wife, Tonya, and I own a second home in Cape Coral, Florida, and it’s become a gathering place during the holiday season. We cherish the time spent there with our three grown children, Jordan, Breanna, and Cameron. Our son Jordan and his wife Allie bring our three little granddaughters—Ava, Rose, and Scarlette—down right after Christmas, and we celebrate New Year’s Eve together at Fishermen’s Village in Punta Gorda. Surrounded by family and close friends, it’s the perfect way to ring in the new year.

We’ve even started a new tradition: a big seafood bake on New Year’s Day with our extended family. My brothers and sister, who also have second homes in Naples, join in, along with friends nearby in Punta Gorda and Cape Coral. And when spring rolls around, we continue the tradition by celebrating Easter together in Florida—a holiday now filled with warm breezes, family meals, and beachside memories.

These are the moments that remind me why I’m grateful—not just for warm weather, but for the gift of creating memories with loved ones.

If you’ve ever thought about making the snowbird lifestyle your own, now might be the time to start. Florida and Arizona remain some of the most popular destinations, but many Michiganders also find their second-home haven in Texas, South Carolina, North Carolina, and California. Whether you’re curious about financing options, investment benefits, or simply exploring the idea of owning a home away from home, let’s connect. I’d be happy to help you consider what snowbird living could look like for you.

For now, let’s embrace the season of thanks here in Michigan—whether you’re cozy by the fireplace or dreaming of sunshine just a plane ride away.
