Discovering Livingston, One Story at a Time
One of the great things about small towns in Michigan are the Downtowns. In Livingston
County, we are blessed with a number of vibrant and walkable downtown districts. From
festivals to farmers’ markets, these downtown areas are the heart of their communities,
and the local businesses that call them home are the spark on which everything else is
built. Brighton’s Main Street is a perfect example of this, and the Great Harvest Bread
Company is a wonderful Oak Pointe resident owned business with a great story to tell!
Back on episode 84, we had the opportunity to sit down with Oak Pointe resident and
owner of Brighton’s Great Harvest Bread, Mac Hawes, to chat about his business and
the impact it has. From the moment we met Mac, his passion and authenticity came
through. Together with his Mom, Amy McCauley, they pour their hearts into creating
fresh bread, sandwiches, cookies, and more.
Morning at Great Harvest starts long before the doors open, as the bread is made fresh
each day and dedicated bakers are up and working before the sun comes up. From the
moment we entered their store, we were welcomed by the smell of fresh-baked bread, a
smile from the staff, and a friendly hello. One of the more interesting things we learned
is that they use only all-natural ingredients in their bread. In fact, most breads have only
5 ingredients, and staff are encouraged to create new flavors, with popular recipes
shared between stores. Many locals know how good his bread is and will come in early
to get the day’s hot, fresh selection. We would highly recommend the extreme cinnamon
swirl bread!
Mac never thought he would own a store in downtown Brighton and is thankful for the
opportunity to be a part of such a great community. He loves being part of downtown
festivals and events and enjoys getting to know his customers and neighbors. As with
so many local businesses, Great Harvest loves giving back and supporting our local
non-profit organizations, schools, sports, and more with donations.
The next time you are strolling Main Street, pop in to try a free sample of bread and say
hi. Their freshly-made breakfast sandwiches are a delight, and you will love their
smoothies, cookies, and made-to-order sandwiches. There is just something different
about a locally owned shop, and Great Harvest is an important part of the Brighton
community.
