Driven By Community

From lake days and football games to golf cart rides and neighborhood friendships, the Mackay family has embraced everything Oak Pointe has to offer. Rooted in faith, family, and community, they’re building a life centered on connection and presence—both at home and through their growing business.

Some families find their way to Oak Pointe by chance. For Robb and Katie Mackay, it feels more like everything in life slowly pointed them here.

The couple, along with their children Colin, 9, and Lucy, 7, have built a life deeply rooted in family, community, and connection since moving into their home in 2019. Though Robb grew up in Owosso and Katie in Rochester, Brighton eventually became the place that brought everything together.

“We loved the balance between city and country life that Brighton was able to provide,” Katie shared. “We had always dreamed of living and raising a family on a lake.”

Before making the move, the family spent five years living in Royal Oak. But after purchasing property in Brighton in 2015, they slowly began building the life they envisioned together. By the time Lucy was born, the timing felt right to officially make Oak Pointe home.

That dream actually started years earlier on Crooked Lake.

The two met through their grandparents, who were best friends, and grew up as family friends before eventually dating after college. Their first date took place right here in Brighton on Crooked Lake, long before they imagined they would one day build a home nearby and raise a family of their own here.

“This year we celebrated our 10-year wedding anniversary,” they shared.

Today, their life revolves around family, faith, sports, lake days, and a very active neighborhood lifestyle.

The Mackays are constantly on the go supporting Colin and Lucy in their many activities. Colin stays busy with Brighton Football, flag football, basketball, and soccer, while Lucy participates in Brighton Cheer and tumbling. Robb serves as assistant coach for Colin’s Brighton Football Freshman Orange team, while Katie coaches Lucy’s instructional cheer team each fall.

“It’s a big part of our lives,” they shared.

Both parents light up when talking about their children’s personalities.

“Both are incredibly kind and conscientious,” they said. “They enjoy being with family and being an active part of our community.”

They describe Colin as creative, hardworking, funny, and a gifted storyteller, while Lucy is known as the “life of the party,” equally hardworking and full of energy and humor.

Outside of sports, the family enjoys spending as much time outdoors together as possible. Lake days are a favorite, often tying boats up with friends on Crooked Lake, taking evening boat laps, or hopping on the golf cart to head up to Oak Pointe Country Club for the pool, driving range, or golf.

“We’ve made great friends with our neighbors, some that now feel like family,” they shared.

That sense of connection is something they treasure most about Oak Pointe.

“We love living in Oak Pointe,” Robb said. “The golf cart lifestyle, the lake, the club, the friendships—it’s all become such a huge part of our lives.”

The Fourth of July especially stands out as a favorite tradition each year, with fireworks over the lake and neighbors gathering throughout the community.

“We usually spend the Fourth at our house so we can enjoy the Oak Pointe fireworks,” Katie said.

Family traditions are deeply important to the Mackays. They alternate holidays between both sides of the family and love hosting Thanksgiving at their home, often deep frying a turkey in the backyard. Family dinners are a priority whenever schedules allow, and movie nights have recently included rewatching *Boy Meets World* with the kids from Season 1.

“Go Mr. Feeny!” they laughed.

Travel also plays a meaningful role in their family life. The Mackays frequently travel to Venice, Florida for spring break, continuing traditions both Robb and Katie experienced growing up themselves. This past year, they took the kids to the Bahamas, and next year they’re planning a trip to Ireland and Scotland in celebration of their Scottish family roots.

Closer to home, you’ll often find the family snowboarding together at Mt. Brighton, golfing in couples league at Oak Pointe, walking their dogs on the Brighton Rec trails, or grabbing dinner at Brighton Bar & Grill.

Their home is also full of animals and personality, including Otto the Irish Setter, Sophie the Cavapoo, and black cats Hutch and Rose.

Faith has remained another steady foundation throughout their journey. The family attends Brighton Methodist Church, where the children participate in Sunday school.

“Fun fact—Pastor Jon from Brighton Methodist actually married us 10 years ago,” Katie shared. “It was kind of a happy accident that both of our families ended up in Brighton.”

That same sense of timing and purpose also led them into entrepreneurship.

In 2025, the Mackays purchased Green Oak Golf Carts and relocated the business from South Lyon to a new showroom and service location on Rickett Road in Brighton. What started as a conversation eventually became a leap of faith.

“Katie pushed us to look into purchasing the business,” Robb shared. “After several conversations and a lot of prayer, we felt comfortable making it a reality.”

The business aligns naturally with the lifestyle they already loved.

“Golf carts are fun,” they said. “When you own a golf cart and can easily ride up to the club or over to your neighbor’s house, it’s a game changer. It truly brings us joy.”

While the Mackays love serving neighbors and local families throughout the community, much of their business also supports commercial clients including retirement communities, recreational parks, airports, and other businesses looking for practical, efficient transportation solutions. One of their newest customers is even the Detroit Zoo, adding another exciting chapter to the company’s continued growth.

Today, Green Oak Golf Carts offers full sales, service, rentals, custom work, storage, and transportation. They are also the only dealer in Michigan carrying Honor golf carts, which are fully manufactured and assembled in the United States.

Robb’s longtime interest in cars, motorcycles, and tinkering in the shop made the transition feel natural. More importantly, owning the business has allowed him to spend significantly more time at home after years of traveling heavily for work.

“It was really important for me to be around while the kids are young,” he shared.

The business has also created deeper ties within the community through local events, parades, and partnerships.

“We have a lot of friends with golf carts now,” they joked.

Neighbors will also have an opportunity to connect with the Mackays and see some incredible custom carts at the upcoming Car, Bike & Cart Show on Aug. 22 at Oak Pointe Country Club, where Green Oak Golf Carts will be participating.

For the Mackay family, life in Oak Pointe is about far more than where they live. It’s about building community, staying connected, being present for their children, and creating traditions that will last for generations.

And judging by the friendships, laughter, golf cart rides, and lake memories already made here, they’re doing exactly that.
