When Jim and I attended Angels of Hope’s Night of Hope this past March, we knew it would be a meaningful evening. What we experienced was something far beyond that.

We were truly blown away.

More than 850 guests gathered at Palazzo Grande for one of the organization’s largest annual fundraisers, but behind the beautiful decor, incredible food, entertainment, raffles and celebration was a much bigger story: Michigan families facing cancer and a nonprofit working to make sure they don’t have to navigate it alone.

A cancer diagnosis can affect nearly every aspect of a family’s life. Along with treatment, appointments and the emotional toll of the disease can come missed work, transportation costs and mounting household expenses.

That is where Angels of Hope steps in.

The Michigan-based nonprofit provides financial assistance to families affected by cancer, helping with essential living expenses such as housing, utilities, groceries and transportation. By easing some of that financial pressure, the organization gives families more room to focus on what matters most: treatment, healing and time together.

Perhaps one of the most remarkable things I learned is that Angels of Hope is entirely volunteer-run. With very little overhead, the organization is able to direct the vast majority of the money it raises toward the families it serves.

For me, the mission also hit close to home. Two of my grandparents passed away from cancer, and I imagine nearly everyone reading this can think of someone they love who has been affected by the disease. Cancer may begin with one diagnosis, but its impact reaches spouses, children, parents, friends and entire communities.

That reality came to life throughout the Night of Hope as families shared what Angels of Hope’s support meant during some of their most difficult days.

One of the evening’s most powerful moments came during the Fallen Angels Tribute. Rachel, a young mother who was diagnosed with breast cancer at just 35, shared her story. During treatment, Angels of Hope helped cover everyday expenses, giving her family one less burden to carry while she focused on healing.

Then she sang.

Her operatic performance of “Hallelujah” filled the ballroom, and the emotion in the room was palpable. It was a beautiful reminder that behind every dollar raised is a real person, a real family and a story still being written.

The evening balanced those moving moments with plenty of celebration. Guests participated in luxury raffles, a wine pull, silent and live auctions and experiences including a private dinner hosted by longtime Night of Hope emcee and supporter Jay Towers.

Seeing Jay in that role was a fun personal connection for me. I remember listening to his radio show every morning during high school, and learning about his longtime commitment to Angels of Hope made the evening even more meaningful.

One of the clearest examples of collective impact came during the paddle raise. A generous donor offered a $25,000 match at the $500 giving level, and more than 30 paddles went into the air.

Those donations weren’t simply numbers on a screen. They represented groceries, utilities, transportation and other everyday necessities for families trying to maintain some sense of stability while navigating cancer treatment.

The evening eventually transitioned from fundraising to celebration, with 50 Amp Fuse bringing guests to their feet. By the end of the Night of Hope, a record-breaking $819,417 had been raised to further the organization’s mission.

As someone who organizes gatherings and events, I was impressed by how beautifully the evening was executed. But what stayed with me wasn't the decor, prizes or entertainment. It was seeing what can happen when hundreds of people decide to show up for families they may never personally meet.
