Fall Clean-Up: Do’s and Don’ts for a Healthy Landscape

As the season shifts and leaves start to fall, it’s the perfect time to give your property a little extra care. At Reynolds & Juett Associates, we often remind homeowners that what you do in the fall makes all the difference when spring rolls around.

DO SPLIT AND DIVIDE PERENNIALS.
Plants like hostas, daylilies, and ornamental grasses thrive when divided in cooler weather. Fall gives them time to settle in and establish strong roots before winter.

DON'T OVER-PRUNE TREES AND SHRUBS.
It’s best to save heavy pruning for late winter or early spring. In the fall, focus on removing dead, damaged, or diseased branches only.

DO TRANSPLANT TREES AND SHRUBS.
Thinking about moving a plant to a sunnier or more spacious spot? Fall is the perfect time, with cooler weather minimizing stress and warm soil encouraging root growth.

DON't LEAVE THICK PILES OF LEAVES.
While a light layer can protect garden beds, too many leaves left on your lawn smother grass and create disease issues. Mulching or composting is a much better option.

DO REFRESH MULCH.
A fresh layer of mulch around trees, shrubs, and beds provides insulation and moisture control through winter—but keep it away from trunks and stems.

And finally—don’t forget your help is just a phone call away. Fall clean-up can be a big job, but that’s where our team at Reynolds & Juett Associates comes in. From transplanting trees to preparing beds for winter, we’ll make sure your property looks great now and thrives next spring.
