Hello Oakhurst!

There’s always something happening around town — festivals, fundraisers, concerts, and plenty of hidden gems — but sometimes it’s hard to know what’s out there. That’s where this new monthly column comes in.

I’m Katie Hess, here to share highlights from Connecting Clarkston, a free community app and podcast created to make it easier to discover what’s going on locally. The app features a calendar full of events, opportunities to volunteer or support local causes, and spotlights on small businesses. It’s free to download — just search “Connecting Clarkston” in your app store.

The Connecting Clarkston Podcast, co-hosted with my friend Anne Bushroe, shines a spotlight on the people and places that make our town unique. From behind-the-scenes looks at local events to conversations with business owners and nonprofit leaders, every episode highlights the heart of Clarkston. Recent guests included Jarett and Josh Luther, who shared about the Clarkston Athletic Boosters and Josh’s inspiring path from CHS football to walking on at the University of Michigan. With the help of Independence Television, these conversations are shared on YouTube, Spotify, and in the app.
Be sure to keep an eye on the app for details about an upcoming volunteer initiative. Local nonprofits are teaming up to share their work, connect with one another, and help the community get involved. It’s a great way to learn about organizations making a difference — and find new ways to support them.

This column will carry that same spirit — connecting the dots between people, places, and happenings that make our community shine. Each month, you’ll find a quick guide to events worth checking out, stories you might not have heard, and ways to get more involved.

Here’s to finding more reasons to get out, join in, and enjoy all that Clarkston/ Independence Township has to offer.
