A Season of Friendship: The 117th Street Ladies Lunch Bunch Celebrates Community and Cheer

As the cul-de-sac street of 117th west of Vicksburg started building out and as new residents moved in, the ladies of the block met and welcomed each other.  One of the first neighbors, Rita Smith, thought it would be a great idea to meet monthly for lunch to catch up and keep up with each other as neighbors and so it began. They have met monthly and invited and included the latest neighbor, Virginia Andrus to the monthly luncheons. These ladies are from all walks of life and different parts of the country but now are united by being neighbors. They all have active and busy lives but still look forward to the monthly luncheons and come unless they are out of town. Harriet Ballou has taken over as the “gatekeeper” sending out group texts on luncheon dates and other fun activities that they all do together.

Harriet Ballou loves being part of the Lunch Bunch because it brings together everything she cherishes most about living in Oakmont Estates — a strong sense of community and meaningful friendships. Having lived in Oakmont for four years after moving from California’s beautiful Central Coast, Harriet has found a wonderful circle of women who make every lunch a time of laughter, connection, and shared stories. For her, the greatest joy comes from the friendships that have blossomed through the 117th Street Ladies Lunch Group — a group that feels more like family with each gathering.

Rita Smith treasures her time with the 117th Street Ladies Lunch Group, finding it to be one of the greatest joys of living in Oakmont Estates. Having moved from Lakeridge South two years ago, she was inspired to start a similar group here after seeing how meaningful it was to connect with neighbors back on Troy Street. For Rita, the Lunch Bunch is more than just a monthly meal — it’s a way to live out the value of “loving your neighbor as yourself.” Through lunches, outings, and even gatherings that include their husbands, the group has built a strong sense of friendship and belonging. They share stories, laughter, and memories while exploring local restaurants, learning about each other’s families, and even keeping an eye out for one another’s beloved pets.
What Rita values most about the group is how it has deepened her sense of community and purpose. She’s gained not only close friendships but also the reassurance that neighbors can become like extended family. The Lunch Bunch has given her a space to connect, uplift, and truly know the people who live around her — something she believes brings warmth and joy to everyday life. “It’s been fantastic,” Rita says. “We all feel more comfortable around each other and have built bonds that go beyond our street. It’s proof that a simple lunch invitation can turn into something beautiful.”

Lupe Ricaldi loves being part of the 117th Street Ladies Lunch Group because it combines two things she truly enjoys: sharing a meal and spending time with uplifting, encouraging women. Having lived in Oakmont Estates for two years after moving from Wolfforth, Lupe delights in walking around the beautiful neighborhood, but what makes her feel most at home is the laughter, warmth, and genuine friendship she experiences during lunch gatherings. The group brings together women from diverse backgrounds and cultures who share respect, kindness, and a willingness to support one another. She treasures the joy, encouragement, and sense of community the Lunch Bunch provides and doesn’t hesitate to say, “They’re the BEST!”

Virginia Andrus is enjoying her first month in Oakmont Estates and has already discovered what makes the community special — the pride her neighbors take in maintaining their homes, the new Liberty High School, and the beautiful landscaping throughout the neighborhood. She’s especially grateful for the 117th Street Ladies Lunch Group, which gives her the opportunity to get to know the women on her street better. Through laughter, networking, and enjoying midday lunches at some of the area’s nicest restaurants, Virginia has found a wonderful way to connect, build friendships, and feel at home in her new community.

Laura Corbin has lived in Oakmont Estates for six years, having moved from Houston, and she treasures the strong sense of community she’s found here. She loves her neighbors and the way everyone looks out for one another, creating a warm and supportive environment. Being part of the 117th Street Ladies Lunch Group has been especially meaningful for Laura, as it allows her to deepen friendships, share support when needed, and enjoy great conversations — sometimes right out in the street! For her, the Lunch Bunch is a wonderful way to connect, laugh, and lean on each other while building lasting bonds.

Gwen Simpson has lived in Oakmont Estates for two years after moving from Santa Fe, NM, and what she enjoys most about her new home is her wonderful neighbors. Being part of the 117th Street Ladies Lunch Group gives her a fun and lively way to connect, as she loves catching up on the latest “gossip” and sharing laughs with her friends. For Gwen, the Lunch Bunch is all about camaraderie, conversation, and enjoying the company of women who make every gathering entertaining and memorable.

Yvette McCabe has called Oakmont Estates home for five years, having moved from Whisperwood, and she delights in the beautiful homes, well-manicured yards, and colorful flower beds. She especially enjoys taking walks and the friendly encounters along the way, which reflect the strong sense of community she values. Being part of the 117th Street Ladies Lunch Group has been a highlight for Yvette, as she treasures the fun-loving spirit, interesting conversations, and shared love of good wine with these amazing women. For her, the Lunch Bunch is a joyful way to connect, laugh, and celebrate friendship.
