Amicis Wine Bar: Where Strangers Become Friends

Every now and then you need to step out of the ordinary, away from your comfort zone, and embrace something new and exciting. If you like wine—and we know Oakmont residents tend to—it could be time to seek out an new experience and explore a little. Amicis Wine Bar aims to provide just that, with a carefully curated cellar that will elevate both your palate and your day.
Owned and operated by Sarah and Wade Cypert, Amicis is a welcoming jewel in the heart of Lubbock. “‘Amicis’ means ‘friends’ in Latin,” owner Wade Cypert explained. “We want our customers to walk in as a stranger and leave as a friend.” With over 20 years of experience in the wine business, Wade knows how this magical beverage can bring people together and everything about Amicis is arranged to do just that.
The concept, he explains, is simple enough but elegant in execution: create a welcoming, refined space and offer something extraordinary within it while keeping it accessible to everyone. “When we came to Lubbock there wasn’t anything quite like this here. “My whole thought [for Amicis] is to get people out of their comfort zone, get them to try new things, but also to have those favorites as well. We do weekly flights, sometimes we pick a region, sometimes we’ll do pairings. I might pick Spain and have three reds and three whites from Spain. I don’t want it so that people just come in and get a glass of cab by default because that’s what they're comfortable with. I want to elevate the selection but still have that California cab if that’s what they prefer.”
Pairing wine and food is an art form, and in keeping with the spirit of Amicis the kitchen is an exercise in simple elegance. “Mostly just small bites, kind of a tasting menu. Our charcuterie boards are really popular—I didn’t want a full kitchen, but we still have a big enough kitchen that we’ll do wine dinners and we can do a full grown menu if the occasion requires.” We should also note that wine tastings are occasionally accompanied by creative tasting pairings—a recent favorite matched the flavors of various wines with Girl Scout cookies, for example.
Amicis is also an event space, and according to Wade they regularly host events ranging “from baby showers to wedding showers and wedding receptions. We’ve even hosted Sweet 16 parties if the girls just like the space.” With a private room seating up to 30 and and overall capacity of around 90, there’s plenty of room to make your special occasion truly special. And if you have a special occasion at home, Amicis is also a retail wine shop and can recommend the perfect bottle for any occasion at 20% off the menu price. Further specials and monthly perks are available for members of the Amicis wine club—but we’ll let them explain that to you.
There’s always something new to discover in Lubbock, and Amicis is the kind of place that reminds you how special our city is. Step into the extraordinary this weekend and give them a try—you may discover a new favorite glass along the way.
