A Life Built on Learning, Family, and Faith
From shaping generations in the classroom to collecting memories at Major League ballparks, Kelly and Nancy Baggett have made community—and each other—the center of a life well lived.
For Kelly and Nancy Baggett, home has always been about investing in people. Whether it was through decades in education, raising three accomplished children, serving at church, or simply getting to know the neighbors, they've built a life rooted in relationships.
The couple has called the neighborhood home for nearly 11 years, though their West Texas roots run much deeper. Kelly grew up in Brownfield, while Nancy is from Lamesa—a fact that still makes itself known whenever they travel. "Nancy's West Texas dialect always gives her away!" Kelly jokes.
Their story began at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene after a mutual friend decided the two should meet. Their first date almost didn't happen quite as planned—Kelly arrived an hour early. He insists someone in his dorm set his clock wrong, but Nancy has always preferred her own version of the story. "I knew he was just so anxious to take me out!" she laughs.
Education became a shared calling for both of them. Nancy spent 26 years teaching sixth-grade English Language Arts and Reading, while Kelly began his career as a teacher and coach before moving into administration, eventually serving as superintendent of schools in Levelland. Even in retirement, Kelly continues to serve neighboring communities as an interim superintendent, proving that a passion for education doesn't simply retire.
Their greatest pride, however, is their family. Son Aaron is a professor of statistics at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, while his wife, Lisa, is a doctor of anesthesia. Twin daughters Abby and Adriene both followed educational careers as well. Abby serves as a counselor at an academic magnet school in Odessa while her husband, Josh, coaches baseball at Midland High. Adriene is an educational diagnostician at Laura Bush Middle School, and her husband, Bryan, is the athletic trainer for Texas Tech Baseball. Together, their three children have blessed Kelly and Nancy with six energetic grandchildren who keep family gatherings lively and full of laughter.
These days, retirement is anything but slow. Kelly enjoys fishing and can often be found cooking a delicious stir-fry on his FireDisc. Nancy stays active through her Sculpt fitness class with friends and always has a new book waiting on her Kindle, while Kelly still prefers turning the pages of a traditional book.
The two also share a few favorite traditions. They've never missed a single season of Survivor—all 50 and counting—and they love spending evenings watching movies together, whether on the patio or curled up inside.
Perhaps their biggest adventure, though, is their quest to visit every Major League Baseball stadium in America. By August, they'll have crossed 18 of the 30 ballparks off their list, carefully planning trips around Texas Rangers games whenever possible. Their love of baseball has become one of the many experiences that keeps them exploring together.
One unforgettable journey took them across Ireland, driving from Dublin through the countryside to Galway. Planning every stop themselves made the trip even more meaningful, and Kelly is already hoping they'll make a return visit someday.
Closer to home, the Baggetts are active members of Southcrest Baptist Church, where Nancy participates in Bible studies and volunteers each week with an after-school Good News Club at a Cooper elementary campus. Their faith community has become an important part of their lives and a place they treasure.
What they appreciate most about their neighborhood, though, is the people.
"We have the best neighbors," they say. "We love seeing children playing, neighbors out walking, and the pride everyone takes in caring for their homes."
Their advice for anyone new to the neighborhood is simple but heartfelt:
"Get out and connect with your neighbors! We are all in this life together."
