As we all know, neighborhoods like the Old Village and the Old Mt Pleasant don’t happen overnight. They grow slowly over time: oak trees thrive, neighbors get to know each other, golf carts hum through on the way to the Pitt Street Bridge, the Pitt Street Pharmacy or Alhambra Hall. It’s one of the reasons this pocket of Mount Pleasant continues to be so beloved. The location is close to everything, including Shem Creek, Sullivan’s Island, Charleston Harbor, and downtown, but the neighborhood itself still feels relaxed, walkable, and deeply rooted.

My husband Fred and I have called Old Village home for our entire time in the Charleston area. We both attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, though we did not meet until later while living in New York City. After college, I attended the University of Georgia School of Law before beginning my career. Life eventually brought us to Charleston, and from the moment we settled here, we knew this was where we wanted to raise our family.

 

We have 3 children whom we’ve loved raising in this special community and sending to its fabulous schools. How lucky are we to have Mount Pleasant Academy right in our backyard? Fred and I treasure the memories of the years our children attended MPA and have also been so thrilled with their experiences at Moultrie Middle and Lucy Garrett Beckham High School.

We live on Bank Street across from Edwards Park, where our two mini goldendoodles spend plenty of time chasing squirrels. My husband spends a lot of time out in the yard in view of the park, perfecting his DIY landscape plan, in hopes of scoring a “Yard of the Month” mention. (Hint, hint Stroll Old Village magazine)

 

We’ve ridden the roller coaster of restoring a historic house, which has been really rewarding. And a lot of folks have told us that a ghost lives there with us. Maybe that’s who’s been eating all the ice cream. We enjoy our neighborhood’s proximity to the water and often take our boat out on the waterways during the warm spring, summer and fall months.

 

Given how much I love this neighborhood, I really enjoy helping my real estate clients buy and sell here. My work spans a wide range of properties across our area, including many of the neighborhood’s most distinctive homes, and I’m grateful that much of my business comes from neighbors and past clients who trust me to help friends and family with their real estate decisions.

It’s the kind of architectural detail that’s hard to replicate and easy to love: a cozy reading perch, a quiet workspace, a child’s fort, or simply a spot to take in the neighborhood around you.

For me, living and working in Old Village and Old Mount Pleasant is about more than real estate. It is about sharing a community built on relationships, history, and the everyday moments that make a neighborhood feel like home.
