Introducing The Mullan Family

Embodying the Vibrant Spirit of the Ottawa Hills Community

The Mullan family—Matt, Emily, and their four daughters, Daisy, Molly, Johanna, and Meg—bring a lively and inspiring presence to the Ottawa Hills community. Originally from Toledo, both Matt and Emily have deep roots in the area. Matt attended St. John’s Jesuit High School and later John Carroll University, while Emily is a proud graduate of St. Ursula Academy and the University of Dayton. Their paths crossed during graduate school at the University of Toledo, where they were both pursuing master’s degrees in Education. Now, years later, they’ve built a beautiful life together in Ottawa Hills.

Matt and Emily are both educators by profession. Matt teaches English at Whitmer High School, while Emily works as an online English teacher for Springfield High School. Their dedication to education is reflected not only in their professions but also in the experiences they’ve cultivated for their daughters.

Daisy, a high schooler, is active in marching band, cross country, and track. She’s also a proud member of Youth Leadership Toledo. Molly, who’s in junior high, runs cross country and track as well and participates in Power of the Pen competitions, in addition to being part of the Junior Chorale. Johanna, in 6th grade, plays basketball, acts in elementary musicals, and enjoys Run Club. Meg, the youngest, balances soccer and Girl Scouts while keeping up with her older sisters.

As a family, the Mullans share a love of adventure and creativity. Whether it’s going on bike rides, playing board games, or hosting “family jam band” sessions, there’s never a dull moment. With Daisy on piano, Molly on guitar, Johanna on ukulele, and the rest of the family adding percussion, their jam sessions are a cherished family tradition.

Individually, each member pursues hobbies that reflect their unique interests. Matt is an avid runner, Emily is diving into gardening and spends her free time reading, and the girls have hobbies ranging from crocheting and sewing to music and playing outdoors with neighbors.

The family cherishes their time spent at lake cottages and cabins, particularly in northern Michigan near Frankfort. Summers are often filled with visits to extended family in other cities, creating lasting memories together.

Living in Ottawa Hills has been a game-changer for the Mullans. “One of the biggest reasons we moved here was the walkability,” Emily shared. “Our kids can walk to school, practices, or study groups, which means more time at home together as a family. It’s been a blessing.” The Mullans also deeply appreciate the rigorous education their daughters receive at Ottawa Hills schools.

From their love of family traditions to their commitment to community and education, the Mullans perfectly embody the spirit of Ottawa Hills.
