The Vanni Family

Love for Life and Community

If you’ve ever crossed paths with the Vanni family, you’ll know they are full of energy and passion for family, fun, and fitness. Meet Michael, Summer, and their three kids: Peter, Luke, and Leo. Whether they’re on the field, in the kitchen, or enjoying the outdoors, the Vanni family is always active, and they love sharing their interests with their neighbors!

Michael and Summer’s love story began in Washington, D.C. Summer was visiting a college friend, and after a while, she and Michael started dating long distance. They later reconnected and their journey together took them all the way to Ottawa Hills, where they’ve made their home.

Summer is a Toledo native, having grown up in the Ottawa Hills area and graduating from Ottawa Hills High School. Michael, on the other hand, is originally from Washington, D.C. He lived there until they moved to Ottawa Hills in 2018.

Summer has always had a passion for teaching and fitness. She played college field hockey at both James Madison University and Ohio University, studying exercise science. Later, she earned her teaching credentials in health education at the University of Toledo. For the past 15+ years, Summer has been a high school teacher and coach. She’s taught at McLean High School in Virginia and has worked with students of all ages, inspiring them to stay healthy and active.

Recently, she’s taken on a new and exciting role as the Athletic Director for Toledo Pickle, a position that has kept her busy and excited about the growing sport of pickleball.

The Vanni children—Peter, Luke, and Leo—are incredibly active, just like their parents. All three boys play football, basketball, and baseball. Luke, the oldest, is also a great golfer. Peter has a special talent for theatre, while Leo takes after his dad with his impressive soccer skills. As a family, the Vannis are all about staying active and enjoying sports together, with pickleball quickly becoming one of their favorite activities.

When they’re not cheering each other on at sports games, the Vanni family enjoys hitting the links for a round of golf. Summer shares that golf is their favorite family hobby, but they’re also big pickleball fans. On top of that, they love attending local sports games for teams like the Green Bears, the Rockets, and the Washington Wizards.

When she has time to herself, Summer enjoys practicing yoga, walking with friends, and even taking sourdough baking classes (although she admits she’s still perfecting her technique!). She’s looking forward to having more time to improve her baking skills in the future.

The Vanni family loves to travel! Hilton Head, South Carolina, holds a special place in their hearts since it’s where Michael grew up visiting as a child. They’ve also spent a lot of time in West Palm Beach, Florida, at the Paley Institute, and have taken many trips to Sarasota, Florida, for baseball tournaments.

One of their most magical trips was to St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands, where Summer’s family has roots. This was the first time the boys visited the island, and it was an unforgettable experience for the whole family.

The Vanni family is deeply passionate about the Paley Institute, which treats orthopedic limb differences and rare conditions. Summer describes Dr. Paley as a personal hero, and the family supports the institute by participating in their half marathon each December. Summer hopes to raise even more money and participate in the event this year to continue supporting this important cause.

The Vannis are big fans of their neighborhood and its many perks. They highly recommend Stubborn Brother Pizza, praising its delicious New York-style pizza. The family also shares a local gem in Hardman Field, which they believe is the nicest field in Ohio. With over 50 years of history, the energy and passion at Hardman Field are felt by everyone who visits, especially during summer tournaments when people come from all over the country to experience it.

For anyone new to the neighborhood, the Vanni family has a special message: get involved! Ottawa Hills is full of friendly faces, great places to eat, and plenty of opportunities for fun. You’ll quickly see why the Vannis love calling this neighborhood home.

The Vanni family’s story is one of love, adventure, and community. Their passion for family, sports, and supporting meaningful causes shines through in everything they do, and they’re proud to call Ottawa Hills home!
