New York City-Touring and Tasting from the perspective of a fifteen year old
New York Public Library
New York City has a million things to see, do, and eat. What are some of the best things to do, you may ask? Well, after a few days in New York, I’ve gathered together the best things to do- from the perspective of a fifteen year old.
EATS
New York City is filled to the brim with many food spots of various cuisines. For breakfast, I have a few different places to eat.
Ess A Bagel
Address: 831 3rd Ave, New York, NY 10022
Ess A Bagel is by far one of my favorite bagels of all time now. I ordered a plain bagel with chocolate chip cream cheese and it came out perfectly toasty and melty.
Stage Door Deli
Address: 834 7th Avenue, New York, NY 10019
Stage Door Deli was a classic and friendly place to stop by for a quick breakfast. I could tell they definitely had their loyal customers, which makes sense due to their workers' charismatic attitudes toward service. I ordered a bagel with chive cream cheese and it was extremely flavorful. They have a vast variety of classic new yorker breakfast favorites from bacon egg and cheese to a classic bagel.
Cha Cha Matcha
Address: 1158 Broadway, New York, NY 10001
If you know anything about the rising popularity of matcha on social media, you’d know that Cha Cha Matcha is a fan favorite. They have many specialty matcha drinks with a large amount of attention to detail. The whole cafe is pink and green, which was very cute. The packaging and presentation of the drink improved the taste in my opinion. I ordered a classic strawberry matcha.
It’s finally the lunch rush in New York- where to go? I personally have a few recommendations up my sleeve.
Mercado Little Spain
Address: 10 Hudson Yards, New York, NY 10001
This restaurant-market was created by Chef Jose Andres, who received a nomination for a Nobel peace prize, which I thought was pretty cool. The market consists of multiple different Spanish street cart style restaurants. My father and we tried an interesting thing created by Chef Jose Andres, which was a liquid olive.
Katz Deli
Address: 205 E Houston St, New York, NY 10002
Featured in the film When Harry Met Sally, Katz Deli is a place with the perfect pastrami sandwich. The meat was well seasoned and perfectly cut. I recommend getting it as it comes, which includes a good helping of house made deli mustard.
Ignazio’s Pizza
Address: 4 Water St, Brooklyn, NY 11201
While we were walking around Dumbo, we stumbled upon a perfect pizza place. Ignazio’s. I ordered just a plain cheese slice and it was by far the best slice of pizza I've had in my life. Something in the New York pizza makes it five times better than anything else.
Fraunces Tavern
Address: 54 Pearl St, New York, NY 10004
This place is not only a cool bar for the adults reading this, but a historic tavern. This is the bar where George Washington said farewell to his officers after the Revolutionary War. My family and I had a great time here, which is mainly because of the historical element.
Finally, after an eventful day of walking and sightseeing, you need the perfect dinner to end the day. Lucky for you, I have a few spots.
Sakagura
Address: 211 E 43rd St B1, New York, NY 10017
You wander into a plain office building and see a sign in Japanese, leading you to a stairwell. Do you go? Well, I’d advise you to if you want to find the coolest underground (quite literally) Japanese speak easy. Each dish was so cool, with so many little dishes to choose from.
La Pulperia
Address: 338 W 46th St, New York, NY 10036
While walking endlessly through the streets for a place to eat, we stumbled upon a little restaurant by the name of La Pulperia. They had the most perfect tapas, blending latin culture with mediterranean fusion.
Sardis
Address: 234 W 44th St #808, New York, NY 10036
Regular Broadway attendees know that a dinner at Sardis before the show is the perfect thing, and I agree with them. With celebrity caricatures lining the walls, it’s proven to be a crowd favorite dinner. And who knows, you could even run into a celebrity too. My mother and I fangirled over seeing Pink and her daughter dining here.
SIGHTS AND ACTIVITIES
Sight seeing from tourists is practically what New York is all about. Out of all the things I saw, these are my favorites-
The Edge-This observation deck was by far the coolest one I went to. The Edge overlooks the city 1,131 feet above the ground. It also has a cool glass cut out on the floor for a view below.
Grand Central Station-For anyone who’s watched Gossip Girl on Netflix, you’d recognize the famous Grand Central Station. It’s famous for its gorgeous ceiling containing the zodiac signs and constellations. There are also some pretty well known restaurants and shops while you wait for your train to arrive.
The High Line-The High Line in New York is also a park, but not what you would expect. The highline is an above ground park that spans from Chelsea to Hudson Yards. It’s a beautiful city park and a quick 30 minute walk from start to finish.
New York Public Library- Being a bit of a book nerd myself, I definitely enjoyed going into the New York Public Library. Its beautiful Vermont marble exterior is carved with gorgeous lettering and statues. Inside lies over 56 million items including books, research material, and other media.
New York is lively and entertaining, after all, it is known as the city that never sleeps. Here were my favorite things I did in New York:
Broadway- Broadway is absolutely amazing, and this is shown to leave the same impression, whether you’re a theatre performer like me and want to do something cool, like my brother. We saw Six, which is a story of King Henry lll’s wives. It was quick and lively, quite like a pop concert, which I loved. The second musical we saw is by far my favorite, having performed in it for my school's fall musical. This musical is called Hadestown, which is a Greek mythology love story.
SOHO-For anyone who loves to shop, SOHO in New York is the place for you. Many major international brands have their flagship stores there and you can most definitely find many cool artist boutiques as well.
OVERALL REVIEW
My second trip to New York City was amazing. I had the time of my life eating, sightseeing, and doing so many cool activities. No matter what person you are, there will always be something in NYC for you. So, I recommend anyone reading this to take a trip to the beautiful city of New York- wander around, you may find something even better than something on my list!
