That's Otis!
From Trinity Trails to Parks of Aledo, Otis the chocolate lab found his way home through a chain of connections — and a story that feels “just exactly perfect.”
Since moving to Parks of Aledo in August 2015, the Mourer family has found it to be the perfect place to raise daughters, dogs, and now — a very enthusiastic puppy named Otis. “The green spaces and sidewalks have been great for all of us to walk on, run around, and fetch in,” they share — and lately, there’s been a lot of all three.
Otis, a four-month-old chocolate lab, didn’t just join the family — he practically networked his way in.
Originally found by 2019 Aledo graduate Logan Mays, Otis was destined for a better situation. Logan, who travels for work, couldn’t keep him but was determined not to let him end up on the streets. Enter a chance meeting on the Trinity Trails, where a man named Jim admired the pup and helped set off what can only be described as a very Aledo-style connection chain. Jim called Parks of Aledo dog enthusiast Rob Adams, who knew Mark’s black lab, Charlie, had died last October. One call later, the wheels were in motion.
By April 29, Otis had officially landed where he was meant to be.
His name carries a story almost as memorable as his arrival. Otis is named after a dog from Grateful Dead lore — belonging to Bob Weir — who famously wandered onstage during a live performance of “Ripple” and received a round of applause. (Not a bad debut.) The moment was even immortalized between the first verse and chorus, where Jerry Garcia acknowledged Otis, which was recorded on the Reckoning live album. “That’s Otis!” Jerry said.
For Mark, the name hits even closer to home. “Ripple” was the bedtime song sung to their daughter Reese, and honoring both that memory and the recent passing of Bob Weir made the timing feel, as the band would say, “just exactly perfect.”
These days, Otis is settling into life with Sadie, the family’s golden doodle, who is… adjusting. While Sadie may still be deciding how she feels about her new, highly energetic roommate, Otis has already won over daughter Haley, who has fully embraced her role as his biggest fan.
Like most puppies, Otis is working hard on mastering the basics — including house training, which is, as the family notes, “improving and very much appreciated.” He’s also developed a strong attachment to his squeaky duck (a parting gift from Logan), and an early talent for retrieving… which he proudly demonstrates whenever possible, whether you’re ready or not.
You’ll often find Otis exploring the neighborhood’s green spaces, tagging along on walks, or making pit stops at local parks — usually with the squeaky duck in tow. He’s also made a few trips to visit family in Point Vista, proving he’s already expanding his social circle.
When asked about their favorite memory so far, the answer is simple. “Watching him smile and enjoy our home and family,” they share. “The daily joy is the best part.”
As for Otis’s dream adventure? It would involve going back in time to meet his namesake — preferably during that famous onstage moment. And honestly, given his personality so far, it wouldn’t be surprising if he tried to steal the spotlight all over again.
