Leading with Heart

The American Heart Association’s Teen of Impact Program

As we celebrate our graduates and the inspiring teens and young adults in our community this month, one thing is clear—this next generation is already making a meaningful difference. After sharing the American Heart Association’s Sweetheart Program for high school girls, I was excited to learn about another powerful initiative, this one open to all students ages 13–18, designed for those ready to step into leadership and create real change: the Teen of Impact campaign.

A Program with Purpose

The Teen of Impact campaign, led by the American Heart Association, is a nine-week fundraising and leadership competition taking place February through April 2027. Open to students ages 13–18, the program empowers teens to lead their own initiatives supporting heart health while raising critical funds and awareness. Along the way, participants build confidence, develop leadership and communication skills, and gain hands-on experience that will serve them far beyond the campaign.

Local Impact, National Reach

What makes this program especially exciting is its national reach. In 2026, 328 students from across the country participated, each working to create meaningful impact in their communities. Locally, the Northwest Arkansas class included seven teens who collectively raised an impressive $55,000, an inspiring example of what can happen when passion meets purpose.

At the conclusion of the nine-week campaign, one participant is recognized as the Teen of Impact winner. In 2026, that honor went to Joseph Jagla, whose dedication and fundraising efforts earned him a scholarship and well-deserved recognition.

Building Leaders for the Future

Beyond the impact they make, participants also receive meaningful benefits along the way. Teen of Impact nominees are awarded community service hours for their efforts, opportunities to earn local and national scholarships, and a personalized letter of recommendation from the American Heart Association. They are also recognized at the 2027 Go Red for Women Luncheon in May, celebrating their hard work and commitment to making a difference.

Perhaps most importantly, the Teen of Impact program gives young people the opportunity to discover just how powerful their voice can be. By stepping into leadership roles early, these teens are not only supporting an important cause—they’re building a foundation for a lifetime of service, confidence, and community involvement.

If you know a teen who would thrive in a program like this, nominations are now open.
