Gunner Ney

The Gentle Giant with a Heart of Gold on W La Quinta Ct

Gunner Ney is more than just a pet, he is a beloved member of his family and an endearing presence in the Pinnacle community. Tori and Smith Ney returned to Pinnacle Country Club in May of 2024, but their connection to the neighborhood runs deep. Smith’s family has called Pinnacle home since 2006, and Tori’s family settled there in 2017. Their return felt like a true homecoming, made even more special by the presence of Gunner.

A Unique Goldendoodle with a Special Journey

Gunner is not the typical Goldendoodle. Born on March 10th, he recently celebrated his ninth birthday. As an F1 Goldendoodle, his striking jet-black coat and 100-pound frame set him apart. However, it is his gentle nature, resilience, and unwavering companionship that truly make him special.

Before finding his forever home, Gunner was part of the “Soldier On Service Dogs” program, a nonprofit dedicated to training service dogs for veterans with PTSD or TBIs. After two years of training, he was diagnosed with pre-hip dysplasia, a minor but disqualifying condition for service work. This twist of fate led him to Tori and Smith in early 2020, just as they were finishing college. What began as a short-term dog-sitting arrangement quickly turned into a lifelong bond.

His name, given to him during his training, symbolizes a “brave and bold warrior.” It suited him perfectly, and over time, he has accumulated an assortment of affectionate nicknames, including Mister G, Sir, G-Man, Bubba, and Gunny.

Gentle Giant with a Loving Heart

Despite his imposing size, Gunner is known for his gentle and loving demeanor. He greets everyone—both humans and animals alike—with a calm presence. Rarely barking, he communicates through an endearing snort, especially when he wants attention. His natural ability to sense emotions remains intact from his service training days; he instinctively offers comfort by placing a paw or resting his chin on someone who may be feeling anxious or stressed.

Gunner has a few simple pleasures that bring him joy. His favorite toy is a stuffed hedgehog, which he proudly carries around, announcing his presence with excited squeaks. His treat of choice? Carrots. He carefully places them between his paws before munching them down in record time.

One of his most cherished memories involves a Memphis snowstorm that brought eight inches of fresh powder. Delighted, he dove headfirst into the snow, attempting to fetch snowballs before retreating to the warmth of the fireplace for a well-earned nap.

A Life Filled with Love and Adventure

At home, Gunner assumes his role as the neighborhood watchdog—though more in spirit than action. He can often be found stationed by the glass front door, observing neighbors, dogs, squirrels, and bunnies as they pass by. His daily walks are an adventure, as he insists on stopping at every mailbox along the route.

A true social butterfly, Gunner enjoys outings to Red’s, where he eagerly makes new friends. He is also a frequent guest at his grandparents’ homes, where he is thoroughly spoiled. Despite his large stature, he lets the Baker dogs boss him around and does his best to keep up with the Ney and Boedecker pups—especially at the lake.

Although he loves visiting Beaver Lake with the Ney family, Gunner prefers lounging on the dock over swimming. While he enjoys roaming and taking in the scents, he is happiest resting beside his humans, soaking up the sun.

Above all, Gunner’s greatest joy is simply being by the side of those he loves. His perfect day consists of a cozy, lazy afternoon spent curled up on the couch, belly up, surrounded by family. Whether snuggling, snorting, or squeaking his hedgehog, Gunner is a constant reminder of the unconditional love and companionship that pets bring into our lives.
