A Heart for Leadership
Inside the American Heart Association Sweetheart Program
Yasmeen Kawas
Each year, a remarkable group of young women step into something bigger than themselves, learning, leading, and giving back in ways that leave a lasting impact on both their lives and the community around them.
The Sweetheart Program through the American Heart Association is designed specifically for high school sophomore girls who are eager to grow as leaders while making a meaningful difference. What begins as an opportunity quickly becomes a transformative experience rooted in purpose, connection, and heart.
At its core, the program empowers participants to become advocates for heart health while developing confidence, leadership skills, and a deep understanding of service. Throughout the school year, from August to May, Sweethearts engage in a variety of educational and volunteer activities that bring awareness to cardiovascular health and prevention.
And the mission behind it all could not be more important. Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States, claiming more lives than the next several causes combined. Through this program, these young women are not only educated on heart health, but they are also equipped to share that knowledge with others, creating a ripple effect throughout the community.
Growing Leaders, One Experience at a Time
What makes the Sweetheart Program so special is the depth of experience it offers. Participants do not just learn. They actively engage.
Throughout the year, Sweethearts:
Participate in leadership retreats and team building activities
Complete community service hours through local volunteer opportunities
Learn Hands Only CPR and heart health education
Take part in fundraising efforts supporting life saving research
Build confidence in public speaking, collaboration, and advocacy
By the end of the program, each participant walks away with not only volunteer hours, but also a stronger sense of self and a deeper connection to her community.
A Night to Remember
One of the most memorable moments of the year comes in February at the Northwest Arkansas Heart Ball, a celebrated evening that brings together community leaders, supporters, and families. Sweethearts are honored for their dedication, growth, and contributions, stepping into the spotlight as young women of strength, character, and compassion.
It is a full circle moment that reflects months of hard work, commitment, and personal growth.
More Than a Program
While the Sweetheart Program offers structured experiences, its true impact goes far beyond the calendar of events. It creates a foundation for lifelong leadership, service, and awareness.
Participants gain tools they will carry with them into college, careers, and beyond, learning the value of giving back, the importance of health, and the power of using their voice for good.
Here in our own community, we are proud to have several Pinnacle Country Club young women participating in this incredible program. Their involvement is a beautiful reflection of the heart, leadership, and generosity that continues to define the next generation.
As we celebrate our graduates and rising leaders this June, the Sweetheart Program stands as a powerful reminder that leadership does not begin someday. It begins now.
