"Chicks With Sticks" aka The Sassy Swingers
Highland Meadows resident Melanie Holzner talks about the fun and friendship that come from women getting out on the course regularly to play together.
How long have you all been playing in this league?
The Sassy Swingers began in spring 2024.
How did the league get started?
I wanted to get some girlfriends together on a regular basis who enjoy playing golf in a light-hearted, fun way. It’s a 9-hole (2-hour) commitment on Wednesdays, first come, first served. We’re all in a group text. It’s a scramble format, which means we all hit from the same spot and take the next best ball. We then hit from that spot, and so forth. It reduces the pressure to hit great shots and encourages us all to chat more. There’s no “fee” to become a member, just the green fees for the course.
Is it more competitive or social, or a bit of both?
Super social! In fact, if you’re competitive in golf, you’d probably be frustrated and annoyed playing with us because our goal is to relax, have a couple of bevvies on the course, crank some music (last time it was 80s hip hop), and get to know one another better. There’s definitely more laughing than swinging happening!
How many players usually come out each Wednesday?
Usually four players (out of eight members). I can also schedule an additional tee time next to this one if there’s an overflow. Members will occasionally bring a guest, which is also great exposure for them and for us to get to know others.
Where do you play?
For now, we always play at Highland Meadows Golf Course (HMGC) in Windsor. I have my own golf cart and know the course well, so some gals rotate being in my cart. If you’re new to the group, you’ll probably be with me to start.
What format do you play — stroke play, scramble, match play?
Always a scramble. This isn’t about lowering your personal GHIN handicap; it’s about social interaction and meeting others in a refreshing outdoor environment.
Do you have any fun traditions or weekly challenges?
We’ve tried to incorporate card games, but it made it a bit complicated. This still may be something we do this summer, at times. For example, you may have to play a hole with only one club the entire way. It makes it fun, as different people will have various advantages and strengths on the same hole, so there’s more collaboration.
Have any of you ever hit a hole-in-one during league play?
Not yet! Although, honestly, this format would not be how you’d want it to happen. That would work best if played individually to get the whole experience and credit. That said, there’s no max on hole-in-ones, so…bring it on!
Is there a 19th hole tradition after the round?
Depending on what commitments people have afterwards, there are usually a couple that stick around the golf tavern or someone’s house to continue the conversations!
What do you love most about playing in this league?
The camaraderie, for sure! It’s way better than meeting up for happy hour because you’re engaged outside, moving around, occasionally hitting a ball (and making contact – hopefully), and among fun gals.
Who’s the most competitive in the group — and who’s the most laid-back?
Some are more experienced than others, but everyone has the right relaxed mindset.
Is the league open to new members?
Absolutely! As long as they’re in it for the fun of the sport and interested in meeting new cool chicks, then they’re always welcome! Anyone interested can feel free to text or call me at (202) 714-2222.
