Creating outdoor spaces in Colorado, however, remains at the heart of Zach’s work, and it’s more than a profession; it’s a calling rooted in a lifetime spent appreciating the state’s rugged beauty.

 

“Colorado has such a distinct landscape, and it deserves designs that belong here,” Zach shared. “Our work is intentionally crafted for this environment, and we want to celebrate the natural beauty around us while building spaces that truly thrive.”

 

A Colorado Springs native, Zach has always felt at home outdoors. As a kid, he gravitated toward hands-on work, spending countless hours helping in the family yard. That early interest eventually led him north to Colorado State University, where he earned his degree in Landscape Architecture while working at nurseries and landscape firms to gain real-world experience.

 

Following graduation, Zach spent six years as a landscape designer and project manager with a local design-build company. Those years helped him refine his skills, deepen his knowledge, and ultimately discover a desire to shape the creative process more fully.

 

“I reached a point where I wanted greater control over the quality of the work and the level of design,” Zach explained. That motivation led him to launch Oak & Stone Design in 2020, bringing custom hardscape and landscape design to homeowners across Northern Colorado.

 

The name carries personal significance. “Oak trees have always been a symbol of strength for me, and stone represents consistency,” he said. “Together, Oak & Stone reflects what we stand for: beauty, durability, and lasting value.”

 

Now in its fifth year, the company is known for its thoughtful, detail-driven design process. Zach and his team take time to understand how clients want to use their space, ensuring the final product feels personal, functional, and uniquely suited to their lifestyle. From patios and walkways to outdoor kitchens, retaining walls, driveways, and now indoor projects, every project is created with longevity and artistry in mind.

“People often assume xeriscape means dull or colorless, but that couldn’t be further from the truth,” he said. “Using native plants and climate-appropriate designs, we create vibrant, sustainable spaces that look great year-round while conserving water.”

 

Outside of his work, Zach continues to live the outdoor lifestyle he designs for. He enjoys biking, hiking, fishing, and paddleboarding, and he’s also a trained chef who loves experimenting in the kitchen. Supporting the community is important to him as well. He volunteers with Be the Gift, helping provide home repairs for single mothers, and is eager to expand that involvement in the years ahead.
