Two Fun Halloween Recipes Sure To Get Some Attention!
"I absolutely love the fun of Halloween and the chance to get creative, especially when it comes to 'playing' with food presentation to complement the over-the-top Halloween decorations at our house." Reneta Bird
Cat Crap Cake
Follow the directions for a chocolate fudge brownie mix for a 9x9-inch pan. I added 1 cup of chocolate chips. I baked the brownies in a 6x10-inch pan, following the recipe time for a 9x9-inch pan. (Substitute any recipe: cake, brownie, bars, etc., for the base).
When the brownies have cooled, place them in a plastic container or box lined with a non-scented white plastic garbage liner to resemble a kitty litter box. Look for a container similar in size to your brownies or cake that resembles a kitty litter box.
I used approximately 14 ounces of frosting. Canned or homemade works; it just needs to be fairly thick. Frost the top of the brownies.
Mix 2 cups of crispy rice cereal with 2 TBSP of brown sugar and completely cover the frosting (this is the “kitty litter”).
Melt approximately twelve 1 1/3-inch Tootsie rolls in the microwave, checking every 15 seconds. Shape them into cat droppings. I used 2 tootsie rolls for each lovely formation. Arrange over the crispy rice cereal, leaving small droppings on the side of the “box”.
Serve with a kitty litter scoop for effect. (Preferably new). 😊
Creepy Face Meat Pie (Serves 6)
1 lb. lean ground beef
1 cup diced onion
3 cloves of minced garlic
1 cup diced carrots
1.5 cups diced potatoes
1 cup diced celery
1 cup beef broth
2 TBSP tomato paste
1 tsp each dried thyme, rosemary, & chives
½ tsp each pepper, salt, dried basil
¼ tsp each onion and garlic powder
2 + TBSP dry red wine
1 cup frozen peas
2 pie crusts
Preheat oven to 375 F.
In a large skillet, sauté ground beef until cooked through. Add onion and garlic and cook until translucent. Add carrots, potatoes, and celery, and cook another 5 minutes.
Mix in beef broth, tomato paste, all seasonings, and red wine. Simmer 10 minutes or until thickened. (If necessary, add 2 TBSP instant potatoes to thicken mixture). Add frozen peas.
- Roll out 1 pastry sheet. Line a 9-inch round pie dish or deep-dish oblong pan.
- Fill the pastry with the filling.
- Roll out the 2nd pie crust, cover the dish, and seal the edges. (I used a fork to crimp the edges).
- Time to get creative! Cut slits for eyes, nose, and mouth. Use leftover pie crust scraps to build up the nose and around the eyes for effect. Make it scary or cute.
- Brush the areas around the eyes, mouth, nose, edges, etc., with beaten egg to create a browning effect.
- Bake for 35-40 minutes or until the crust is golden brown.
Note: Use your favorite meat pie filling. Pie crusts can be store-bought or homemade. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat individual slices in the oven at 350 F for 10-15 minutes.
