Traditional Old Fashioned

Now that we’ve covered many of the iconic Kentucky bourbon distilleries in our three-part series, your whistle may be whetted to try to your hand at making a traditional Old-Fashioned cocktail.  Here is a recipe to get you started:

A classic Old Fashioned is a timeless cocktail made with whiskey, sugar, bitters, and water. The drink is traditionally prepared by muddling a sugar cube with bitters and a splash of water, though many modern recipes use simple syrup instead.

Ingredients
  • 2 oz bourbon or rye whiskey
  • 1 sugar cube (or 1/2 tsp sugar)
  • 2–3 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 1 tsp water
  • Orange peel, for garnish
  • Ice, preferably one large cube
Instructions
  1. Place the sugar cube in an old-fashioned or rocks glass.
  2. Add the bitters and water to the glass.
  3. Muddle the ingredients together until the sugar is dissolved. For a smoother mix, use simple syrup and skip the muddling step.
  4. Add the whiskey and stir to combine.
  5. Place a large ice cube in the glass.
  6. Stir the cocktail again until it is well-chilled and properly diluted.
  7. Take a wide strip of orange peel and express its oils over the drink by twisting it over the glass.
  8. Garnish with the orange peel and enjoy.
