The Red Tail community is proud to celebrate the remarkable achievements of Giovanni “Gio” Kennedy, whose football career at the University of Mount Union has earned him recognition on both the regional and national stage.

Most recently, Gio was named one of three finalists for Male Collegiate Athlete of the Year by the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission, honored at the annual Cleveland Sports Awards held at Rocket Arena. The ceremony recognizes elite athletes from across the region — from high school standouts to professional stars — making Gio’s finalist placement an exceptional honor.

A Career Defined by Consistency
Gio’s collegiate career is distinguished not only by accolades but by durability and commitment. He played in every single game during his four years at Mount Union — totaling 55 games — a rarity in a program known for its depth and competitiveness.
He also competed in two Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl national championship games:
  • Freshman year in Salem, Virginia

  • Junior year in Houston, Texas

His only major injury — a high ankle sprain — occurred during his junior-year Stagg Bowl appearance, underscoring just how resilient he was throughout his career.

Honors at Every Level
Gio’s list of achievements places him among the most decorated players in Division III football:
  • Three-time First Team All-OAC (2023–2025)

  • Six First Team All-American honors (senior year alone)

  • Named a Consensus All-American (one of only five players nationally)

  • The only Consensus All-American also named Academic All-American

  • 2025 Team Captain

His All-American recognitions include honors from:
  • AFCA

  • AP

  • Walter Camp Foundation

  • NCAA Division III Academic All-American Team

Additionally, Gio was nominated for the All-State Good Works Team, recognizing student-athletes who excel both on the field and in their communities.

National Recognition
Further cementing his elite status, Gio was ranked the #1 Offensive Lineman in all of Division III football by the National Scouting Combine and was invited to attend the prestigious showcase — an opportunity reserved for the nation’s top prospects.

Looking Ahead
Following graduation, Gio will begin his professional career with Lakefront Capital, working in wealth management — applying the same discipline and leadership that defined his football journey.

From team captain to national award finalist, Gio’s story is one of perseverance, excellence, and community pride. The Red Tail neighborhood celebrates his accomplishments and looks forward to all that lies ahead for this outstanding young professional — whose legacy at Mount Union, and roots in Red Tail, will not soon be forgotten.
