A Ride to Remember

A classic car becomes more than just a machine—it turns into a lifelong passion and a gateway to community. Don Wilcox’s 1965 Mustang Fastback proves that the stories behind a vehicle can be just as powerful as the ride itself.

All cars have a little bit of history. Where they went, how they were used, and how they were cared for all factor into what makes every car different. Some cars are built to last, while others are not. Don Wilcox’s 1965 Mustang Fastback most certainly does not fall into the latter.

About the Car
Don first purchased the Mustang in 2002 and has been taking great care of it ever since. It has numerous outstanding qualities, but what Don finds the most fascinating is the one-of-a-kind engine. “This engine is a one-of-a-kind deal,” said Don. “It’s a K-Code Engine, and only 1% of hot rods in the 1960s contain one of these.” Despite Don’s love for the Mustang, this car was not a vehicle that he always yearned for. “I bought the car from a broker back in 2002. Back when I was working, I didn’t even have a car of my own; I had to use a company car!"

Association with Car Clubs
While Don does have a close love for his Mustang, he has also shown his appreciation for the art of car collecting by allowing the public to see what his car has to offer. “We got involved in car clubs, and we still see people that we met from them from time to time,” said Don. “We started a North Coast Mustang and Ford Club in 2005. It’s a nonprofit organization that had 12 members at the time, and 20 years later, we have around 150 members now.”

Advice to Car Owners
Every car owner has experiences, good and bad, with the ride that they use to conquer the road. Don Wilcox is no different. “You gotta enjoy it,” said Don. “If you don’t justify the money spent on the car, then what is the point of even buying one in the first place. Love your car, and it will love you back.”
