Meet Sadie: The Border Collie with Boundless Energy and a Whole Lot of Love
Sadie, a 2½-year-old Border Collie, has quickly become a beloved member of the Shumiloff family—and a favorite furry friend throughout the Red Tail neighborhood.

Alex and Patty Shumiloff, long-time residents and proud dog lovers, have shared their 40 years of marriage with several cherished pets. After the heartbreaking loss of their three Pekingese within a single year, their home felt incomplete. That’s when they began the search for a new companion and, after careful research, chose the breed known for its intelligence, loyalty, and enthusiasm: the Border Collie.
Enter Sadie—a bright, bouncy, and affectionate pup they welcomed into their hearts and home from an AKC breeder. True to her breed, Sadie is exceptionally smart, having completed 18 weeks of obedience training. While she understands her commands perfectly, she sometimes exercises her own judgment on when to follow them. (She is, after all, a Border Collie with a bit of sass.)
The inspiration behind her name? The Shumiloffs are loyal Mercedes-Benz enthusiasts, and “Sadie” felt like the perfect fit—a name as sleek and full of personality as the car brand they love.
Sadie’s days are filled with boundless energy and playful antics. One of her favorite games involves the Shumiloffs tossing toys over the second-floor bannister. She bolts down the stairs with excited barks to retrieve them—again and again—far outlasting the energy of her human playmates. She also has a funny habit of placing her frisbee around her face and trotting proudly around the house like she’s putting on a show.
But it’s not just Alex and Patty who have fallen under Sadie’s spell. She has a special bond with neighbors Jim and Holly Hovanec, and she’s a familiar face (and wagging tail) at morning “coffee talks” with the ladies on the block. She even enjoys watching Dog TV—clearly a pup with refined taste.
Above all, Sadie is the very definition of unconditional love. She's always thrilled to see her people, radiates joy, and brings laughter into every room she enters. Whether she’s racing around the house or simply resting beside her humans, she has a way of making everyone feel loved.
And yes—she is spoiled, and proudly so! Not just by Alex and Patty, but by just about everyone she meets. Neighborhood walks often involve stops for treats from friends who’ve come to know and love her. If “spoiled” had a ranking, Sadie might just top the list—and no one seems to mind one bit.
Sadie is more than just a pet to the Shumiloffs. She’s a source of comfort, a ball of energy, a daily delight, and a beloved member of both their family and the greater Red Tail community.
