From Pom-Poms to Putters: Sedona and Brecken Benedict Swing Toward Success

Avon Middle School golfers Sedona and Brecken Benedict are making their mark early—combining skill, focus, and family support to rise through the ranks at Red Tail and beyond.

At Red Tail, golf is more than just a game—it’s a way to connect, grow, and challenge yourself. Few embody that spirit better than sisters Sedona and Brecken Benedict, two talented young golfers from Avon Middle School who are already making waves on and off the course.

After six years of competitive cheerleading, the girls are teeing up for something less pep and more putt. From the moment they could walk—literally—Sedona and Brecken have had golf clubs in their hands. Sedona, now 14, jokes that she got her first set of clubs before her first birthday, while 12-year-old Brecken started playing “as soon as I could walk.” Their early start has paid off, with both girls showing impressive skill, sportsmanship, and dedication to the sport they love.

Their passion is fueled by strong mentors and family support. Both sisters credit their dad, along with Coach Nick Paez, Coach Garth, and Coach Derek, for shaping their development and inspiring their discipline. They also share admiration for golf great Tiger Woods, whose legacy continues to motivate their drive to succeed.

The Benedict sisters spend much of their practice time at GOLFTEC, Red Tail, and Hitterz, where they fine-tune their swings and build consistency. They also represent the Hawks team, competing in a variety of events, including US Kids tournaments, Junior PGA competitions, and Red Tail Hawks events.

Their tournament experience spans far and wide—Sedona has competed in Avalon (Warren), Eagle Creek (Norwalk), Black Brook (Mentor), and Punderson (Newbury), while Brecken’s golf travels have taken her from Eagle Creek (Sandusky) and Firestone (Akron) all the way to Las Vegas’ Reflection Bay. Along the way, Brecken has even met legends of the game such as Bernhard Langer, David Duval, and Justin Leonard.

Both sisters have notched impressive achievements for their age. Sedona has earned multiple top finishes in US Kids tournaments, including three 2nd-place medals and several Top 5 finishes. Brecken, meanwhile, proudly holds the title of Junior Club Champion at Red Tail.

But beyond the scores and trophies, the Benedict sisters value the lessons golf has taught them. For Sedona, it’s about resilience and focus: “You can’t do anything about a shot you already hit—the next shot is the most important.” Brecken adds that the game has sharpened her focus and decision-making skills that serve her both on and off the course.

Their favorite part of golf, though, is simple: spending time with their dad. The bond they share through the game is clear every time they step onto the course together.

Both sisters also have their eyes on the future. Brecken and Sedona plan to play golf in college, and both have their sights set on Ohio State University.

Their advice for younger golfers is filled with wisdom well beyond their years: “Don’t worry about the last shot—focus on the next one and keep a positive mindset.”

Whether it’s sinking a 40-foot putt for a personal best, as Sedona once did on the 18th hole, or meeting golf legends at Firestone, the Benedict sisters remind us that passion, perseverance, and positivity are what truly drive success.

The Red Tail community is proud to watch Sedona and Brecken grow as athletes, teammates, and ambassadors of the game—two rising stars with a shared love for golf and an even stronger bond as sisters.
