Opening the Door to a Fresh Start: The Andersons’ Stunning First-Floor Transformation
With a first-floor makeover, the Andersons crafted a space that’s as functional for family life as it is inviting for guests.

Before
After a decade of living on Laurel Way, the Anderson family is now ready to welcome all their friends and family over to enjoy their newly renovated home. Jim, Susan, Carter and Emerson were eager to remodel their home to be more customized to their daily lives. With the two school-aged kids and Duncan, their Doodle, they were in need of a more updated and organized home base. They also felt doing some work on the house was best for the social aspect of their lives.
The Andersons remodeled the entire first floor of their home. That includes the kitchen, living room, half bath, office, dining room, foyer and mudroom. They wanted a cohesive, updated design throughout the whole first floor space. They were able to do this with the help of a general contractor, Natural Home Design, and an interior designer, Angi Laverty. Jim had known the contractor for years, so already having established trust with the people doing the work made the experience less stressful. This was significant as they were designing the home to reflect their style and taste, as well as to function better for their family and lives. For example, they updated all of their appliances and lighting to more energy-efficient models!
Now that the remodel is complete, they have brand new spaces to enjoy. So, if you ask them what part is their favorite, they will have a hard time picking! They really love their kitchen and mudroom, but also the built-in bar and cabinets/shelving that they added in the living room. They also love their pot-filler. While they’ve always kept the house picked up, the new space helps them aim to avoid clutter even more now. Although this battle isn’t always won with the kids, the beauty of the interior is the main focus.
However, the process wasn’t all that easy. It did end up taking longer than expected and they felt nothing could have prepared them for all of the dust that comes with the renovation. They also didn’t expect to take as much time as they did to go through their things and pack away what they wanted to keep. So, their advice to other homeowners considering a remodel is to start purging now; it takes time, but it’s worth it. Plus, take advantage of the dumpster when you have it to purge even more, the Andersons sure wish they did. But, all-in-all the remodel has made more mundane day-to-day tasks, like laundry, more tolerable and has been a good excuse to entertain more.
The family plans to remodel their master bedroom and bath, as well as their basement for the next phase in their journey!
