Canopy Daytrip

A ‘One Tank or Less’ Trip to Holden Arboretum

Rich approaching the Murch Canopy Walk Entrance

Those of us who grew up in Northeast Ohio and who are of a certain age should remember Neil Zurcher, the popular TV travel reporter from Channel 8, who spent four decades uncovering fun and offbeat attractions, including quirky museums, one-of-a-kind restaurants, natural wonders, historic villages, and more — just a short drive from home! When Rich and I have a day with no specific plans, I like to channel Neil Zurcher for inspiration on where to go for a day trip that doesn’t require an overnight stay.

Recently, we had one of those days with nothing on the agenda, so we ended up driving to Lake County and spending time at the Holden Arboretum in Kirtland.  Neil Zurcher often highlighted Holden Arboretum as a top major destination for viewing the changing leaves in the autumn and for walking among the treetops on the Arboretum’s Murch Canopy Walk, or the Kalberer Emergent Tower, a structure 120 feet above the forest floor that provides breathtaking views.

Rich and I made our trek on an early spring day that was quite pleasant.  The Holden Arboretum features more than 20 miles of trails that lead you through cultivated gardens and native forests.  While we didn’t manage 20 miles of trails, we did try several, including the Canopy Walk, where we strolled along a 500-foot-long elevated walkway that rises 65 feet above the forest floor.  We walked amongst the treetops and were able to appreciate the forest from an entirely different perspective.

The Murch Canopy Walk and Kalberer Emergent Tower open for the season in April each year, and visits are included with membership and general admission.  From April to October, both structures are open Tuesday through Sunday, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. During November, the structures are open Saturdays and Sundays only (weather permitting) from 10:00 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.

On average, it takes about an hour and a half to two hours to enjoy both the Murch Canopy Walk and Kalberer Emergent Tower. Guests may spend up to 30 minutes at this experience, allowing ample time to relax and enjoy the views. The Canopy Walk is located about six-tenths of a mile from the Corning Visitor Center, where you check in and secure your admission. Holden Arboretum admission includes 240+ acres of gardens and trails, and amenities. Admission to the Murch Canopy Walk and Kalberer Emergent Tower is both included in general admission.

Non-member Adult tickets are $21.  Kids 3-12 are $15. Two and under are free.  Several membership options are starting at $65.
