The Lion of Lyons Gate

This lovable Golden Retriever has filled Austin and Brooklyn’s home—and hearts—with adventure, laughter, and unconditional love.

Champ is a one-year-old Golden Retriever who joined Austin Maag and Brooklyn Mueller shortly after they purchased their first home together. From daily neighborhood walks to cross-country travels and milestone moments, Champ has quickly become an irreplaceable part of their family. Known for his gentle nature and big personality, he’s a favorite among neighbors and family alike.

After buying their first home, Austin and Brooklyn knew something was missing—and that something turned out to be four-legged. They welcomed Champ into their lives from a local breeder in Cleveland, and he immediately brought warmth and energy into their new space. His name, Champ, comes from a nickname Austin heard often growing up, and it suits him perfectly. He’s also affectionately known as “The Lion of Lyons Gate,” a title earned through his confident presence and watchful eye over the neighborhood.

Champ is famously friendly, showing a genuine love for both people and animals. On daily walks, Austin and Brooklyn often find themselves stopping so Champ can greet neighbors—he’s always ready to hand out affection. Despite having several cozy dog beds throughout the house, Champ prefers the cold hardwood floors or lounging on air vents during the warmer months, proving comfort is very much on his own terms.

What stands out most about Champ is his gentle temperament. He’s especially patient with the couple’s nieces and nephews, handling hugs, tumbles, and imaginative “horse rides” with ease. He’s also an avid traveler, having visited more than a dozen states by plane, car, and boat. Whether running through ocean waves, digging in the sand, or relaxing on family vacations, Champ is happiest wherever Austin and Brooklyn are.

At home, Champ keeps things entertaining with his quirky habits. Door stops are a favorite toy, and no toy basket stays full for long—he makes sure to empty it completely to find the one toy buried at the bottom. He’s also happily spoiled with Starbucks pup cups, dog-friendly ice cream treats, and regular Golden Retriever meetups. During the summer, he can often be found in the backyard watching golfers pass by, proudly earning his reputation as the unofficial Red Tail Ranger.

Champ has even played a role in one of Austin and Brooklyn’s most meaningful moments. During a beach trip to the Outer Banks, while the couple was tossing a toy with Champ, Austin surprised Brooklyn with a proposal. As Austin got down on one knee, Champ ran over and sat perfectly between them, sealing the moment as one they’ll never forget.
