One Resident’s Journey from Vision to Vibrant Community

When Matt Nakon first read about a proposed golf course community coming to Avon in early 1996, it immediately caught his attention. At the time, similar communities were only found on Cleveland’s east and south sides, and the idea of one on the west side felt both exciting and uncertain. Still, Matt didn’t hesitate. Within a short time, he secured a lot—long before the golf course design was finalized or even a course architect had been selected.

Matt took a leap of faith as there were only a couple of model homes and some conceptual drawings. The golf course itself wasn’t even fully planned yet.

As one of the very first residents, Matt and his family began building in May 1996 and moved in that October—becoming amongst the first homes bordering what would eventually become the golf course. With so many unknowns, he made sure to negotiate protections into the purchase, including permanent green space in case the course never came to life. Fortunately, that vision did come together—though not without changes. The course was ultimately redesigned entirely from its original concept.

What drew Matt to Red Tail wasn’t just golf—it was the idea of a complete lifestyle. He was looking for a community that balanced high-quality amenities with a welcoming, family-friendly environment. Over time, that vision became reality.

It took a few more years than originally thought, but Red Tail has become what he was hoping it would -  a great place to raise a family, with a strong sense of community and without the formality you sometimes find at traditional country clubs.

Over the past 30 years, Matt has watched Red Tail grow into a vibrant neighborhood filled with friendly, down-to-earth residents. Many of those early neighbors became lifelong friends, creating a close-knit atmosphere that still defines the community today.

Of course, golf remains a central part of life. For Matt, one of the simple joys is being able to come home, hop in a golf cart, and head out for a quick round. The course, along with the staff, continues to be one of his favorite aspects of living in Red Tail. Beyond the fairways, the clubhouse patio has become a key gathering place, bringing neighbors together in a relaxed, social setting.

Matt also plays an important role in one of his family’s and Red Tail’s most meaningful traditions—the Karen P. Nakon Breast Cancer Foundation Golf Outing, held every August. The event draws a full field each year and reflects both his late wife’s legacy and the generous spirit of the community.

Looking back, Matt is grateful for the life he’s built in Red Tail. It was a place where he raised his family, built lasting relationships, and created memories that continue to bring his children back home.

“Red Tail is a place that makes your kids want to come back and visit,” he says. “That is all any parent wants.”

As he looks ahead to retirement, Matt is excited for more time on the course and continued connection with the community he helped shape from the very beginning. For him, choosing Red Tail wasn’t just about buying a home—it was about believing in a vision that, decades later, has more than delivered.
