Rising to the Net

From a fifth-grade discovery to competing on the national stage, Scarlet McDavid is setting her sights on Division I volleyball.

Scarlet McDavid, 15, a sophomore at Magnificat High School, has been playing volleyball since she was 9. A setter, she currently plays for Magnificat and will compete for Cleveland Volleyball Company (CVC) during club season. She previously played for Academy Volleyball Club (AVC), where her team was ranked among the top 10 in the country and won the Nike 15 Open Tournament.

McDavid’s love for volleyball began in fifth grade with her coach, Kim Hirsch. She credits Hirsch with helping her discover how much she enjoyed the sport. McDavid also looks up to Harper Murray, whom she has met through volleyball.

Club volleyball has taken McDavid across the Midwest and to national tournaments in places such as Dallas and Orlando. Her teams have competed at Nationals every year since she began club volleyball. She has also attended volleyball camps at Virginia Tech and Marist University and was invited to a National Sand Volleyball Tournament in Clearwater Beach, Florida.

Through volleyball, McDavid has learned discipline, time management, mental toughness, and how to work with teammates and coaches under pressure. Traveling for tournaments has also taught her how to keep up with schoolwork in airports and on planes.

Her favorite volleyball memory is winning the Nike 15 Open and earning an Open Bid for Nationals in 2026. Her goal after high school is to play Division I volleyball.

For aspiring players, McDavid recommends developing a “next play” mentality, building resilience, and finding a coach who can provide private lessons and consistent training.
