Fix Your Swing
Common Issues and How to Avoid Them To address common issues with iron swings, it's important to understand both the problem and the corresponding solutions to improve your overall performance on the course.
Hitting Behind the Ball (Fat Shots)
This occurs when the club strikes the ground before the ball. To fix this, focus on proper weight transfer. Ensure your weight shifts to your front foot during the downswing. Practicing with a towel under your arms can help keep your arms and body in sync.
Topping the Ball
This happens when the clubhead strikes the top of the ball, causing it to roll along the ground. To correct this, maintain a steady head position and avoid lifting your head too early. Ensure you have a slight forward shaft lean at impact.
Pulling the Ball
This issue arises when the ball flies to the left (for right-handed players) due to an outside-to-inside swing path. To fix this, check your alignment and ensure your shoulders are parallel to the target line. Practicing a more inside-out swing path can also help.
Slicing
A slice is when the ball curves dramatically to the right (for right-handed players). This is often caused by an open clubface at impact or an over-the-top swing path. Strengthening your grip and focusing on an inside-out swing path can help reduce slicing
Shanking
This occurs when the ball is struck by the hosel of the club, sending it sharply to the right (for right-handed players). To fix this, ensure you are standing the correct distance from the ball and maintain balance throughout your swing. Practicing with a head cover placed on the ground next to the ball can help you avoid hitting the hosel.
