Benefits of Reformer for Dancers

Pilates is great for dancers because it targets many of the physical demands and challenges dancers face. Here’s a few reasons why it’s a complement to dance training.
Core strength: Reformer is a full body workout, but one thing it focuses on is your core strength. Pilates uses deep abdominal engagement. This helps dancers with balance and stability.
Improved flexibility with control: Pilates encourages dynamic stretching with lengthens the muscles. This helps dancers with extensions, arabesques, and développés.
Enhanced body awareness: This helps with a dancer’s technique and alignment.
Injury prevention and rehabilitation: Dancers suffer injuries from overuse of muscles. Pilates reformer training helps stabilize muscles which aid in recovery.
Better posture and alignment: Many of the exercises I teach on the reformer focus on alignment of the pelvis, spine and shoulders. This helps dancers have a graceful posture when they are on stage.
Breath: Oh how the breath is so important for dancers! It helps with stamina and endurance while performing. It also helps with body movement.
Training in Pilates is basically cross training that supports all types of athletes, not only dancers. The great thing about it is that it has so many options of training. You can do mat or you can practice on all types of equipment. It can be low impact or you could spice it up and add heavy weights and cardio. A lot of women like it because it builds long lean muscles without bulk. It’s endless!
