A Very Merry Homecoming
A Christmas surprise brought spirited Daisy Baker into the family and has been filling their Rehoboth Beach home with energy, affection and plenty of chewed-up toys ever since.
For two boys who had been asking for a dog for quite some time, last Christmas brought a surprise worth waiting for. Their family, RBYCC residents since 2017, had begun searching the previous September for a rescue puppy. After discovering House of Hope, they followed rescue dog Luna and her puppies on social media and fell for a black Shepherd/Lab mix they could adopt at eight weeks old.
Daisy’s arrival remained a secret. While the boys spent the night with their grandparents, an empty-looking box was wrapped and tucked beneath the Christmas tree. Just before they returned, Daisy was quickly placed inside! When the boys opened their early present, speechlessness quickly gave way to pure excitement. Daisy’s homecoming became a sweet family moment that marked the beginning of her new life.
Recently celebrating her 1st birthday, Daisy “Luna” Baker, whose middle name honors her mother, is growing to be an affectionate, high-energy girl who wants to go wherever her family goes. Naming her took three days, with the boys ultimately choosing Daisy. Keeping up with her takes considerably longer: long walks and tennis-ball chases are essentials. A planned six-week obedience stay at Turtle Creek Labs in Greenwood even stretched to nearly 12 weeks, thanks in part to her stubborn little personality.
At home, Daisy has earned the nickname “little crocodile” for her remarkable ability to destroy new toys within minutes. Puzzle toys fare better. If you hide kibble or treats beneath lids and movable pieces, Daisy will become a determined problem-solver, proudly working until she reaches her prize.
Daisy especially loves the beach, where she enjoys running, chasing balls and digging. This fall, her family looks forward to returning with her to the Thompson Island Trail and state park trails. It suits a family that lives in the neighborhood for its proximity to beaches while still feeling tucked into a serene community. Daisy may still be a nervous, energetic puppy with growing and learning ahead, but beneath all that exuberance is a loyal family dog who simply wants to be part of everything. Her family wouldn’t have it any other way.
