Calvin Lillywhite Swinging for Par
Calvin Lillywhite is a Freshman at Timpview High School. He plays the number 2 spot on the High School golf team. Calvin comes from a family of golfers. He has been playing competitively since he was 6. Being the youngest of 6 kids all of which have played golf for Timpview High, he was thrown into the sport and picked it up pretty quick. He currently is the number 2 spot on the team but hopes to move up.
He enjoys playing golf and likes competing with his team and playing by himself. Calvin said "I love having skilled people around me to compete with and help me become better. I also love the lessons it teaches me including working hard, good work ethic, focus and patience." Calvin's older brothers are the ones he looks up to and admires "They have done such a good job at making a great path for me to follow" says Calvin. He finds it easy to ask them for help in sports, school and general advice when he needs it.
Calvin is quite a golfer. His proudest moment was recently with his performance this past season on the high school team. Solo he placed 4th in region and helped the team win the region championship. He took 11th place at the state tournament, making him the highest placing freshman in the state. Keep your eye on this kid. He won the Utah state Jr amateur when he was 12, and has competed in different national tournaments including the Optimist Championship and the FCG National in Palm Springs.
Calvin attributes his success to many people around him including his coaches and his family.
He says his teammates have also been a huge influence to him in helping him with his mental game and preparation. He said he loves golf and basketball, but his number one passion is golf. He also loves outdoor activities, wake surfing and boating are probably his favorite.
He likes camping and razor riding. He enjoys traveling, some of his favorite places have been Southern California, Lake Powell, Pinehurst and New York.
Calvin said " If I could give advice to others wanting to start playing golf I would tell them first to realize how much work it takes. It is easily the most time consuming thing that I do. You have to know that in order to improve you have to be patient and know that the results are never immediate. Secondly don't give up. You may learn something and get the feel of it and completely forget or not be able to do it again the next day. Find people around you who also love to play and who you can compete with".
Calvin plans on continuing to play golf and basketball throughout high school. His goal is to win a state championship in golf especially, both would be amazing. He then hopes to play golf in college at a Division 1 level. He would really like to attend the University of Utah, but he is also interested in Southern California schools SDSU and USC.
