King of Krewe La Bella Moss (and Our Mailboxes): Gerald Soileau Brings the Spirit

If you’ve lived in River Ranch for any amount of time, chances are you know Gerald Soileau—River Ranch’s cheerful and dependable mailman of ten years. But this year, Gerald earned a new title: King of Krewe La Bella Moss for Lake Charles Mardi Gras.
Gerald, who’s worked with the U.S. Postal Service for 26 years, was crowned the very first king of the newly formed Krewe La Bella Moss—a group founded by his aunt and rooted in the small town of Mossville, a once tight-knit community now displaced by industrial expansion. Though Mossville is no longer on the map, its spirit lives on through reunions, celebrations, and now, this Mardi Gras krewe that brings together former residents and their families.
The krewe started with simple gatherings—picnics and Christmas socials—and eventually evolved into something bigger. This year marked their first official Mardi Gras ball, where Gerald’s aunt served as queen and he was honored to serve as king. “They voted, and I was chosen,” Gerald shared. “It was a surprise and a real honor to be the first.”
Gerald helped lead the krewe through four parades, including the massive Sunday parade in Lake Charles, which drew thousands of attendees. “I didn’t expect it to be so big, but it was an amazing experience,” he said. “So many people showed up—it was really special to be part of something like that.”
Though his Mardi Gras crown was temporary, Gerald remains royalty in River Ranch. Known for his friendly chats in the mailroom and his deep care for residents, Gerald has made a lasting impression. He’s the kind of person who sits down with a neighbor in need, offers a listening ear, and always shows up with a smile. “I’ve probably only met one person who didn’t like me at first,” he laughs, “but even they came around after a few months!”
Whether he’s delivering mail or riding floats, Gerald brings warmth, kindness, and joy to every interaction. We’re proud to call him a part of River Ranch—and now, a king.
