Panama’s Hidden Treasures

With bustling markets, lush rainforests, and world-class fishing, Walter Campbell found that this small country has endless experiences to offer

For Walter Campbell, offshore fishing has long been one of his favorite pastimes. So, when one of his oldest and best friends invited him on a work trip to Panama with the surprise chance to tag along, Walter knew he couldn’t pass it up. What unfolded was a journey filled with history, adventure, and plenty of time on the water.

A City of Contrasts
Their trip began in Panama City, a vibrant capital that blends modern energy with historic charm. “The metropolitan area reminded me of New York City,” Walter says. “Skyscrapers line the skyline, yet just steps away, you find yourself in the ‘Old City,’ full of historic sites and rich culture.” Walter and his friend took time to explore those historic landmarks, learning more about the deep ties between Panama and the United States and the global impact of the Panama Canal.

The Power of the Canal
“The canal was such a surprise to me,” Walter admits. “The simple fact that much of the world moves an unfathomable amount of cargo through it was eye-opening. I had no idea how critical it was, not just to Panama, but to the entire world economy.”

Mountains, Rainforests, and the Sea
Beyond the city and canal, Panama’s natural wonders left a lasting impression. Walter traveled into the mountains, rising up to 10,000 feet above sea level, to visit one of the largest rainforests in the world. “It’s breathtaking,” he says, describing the lush greenery and constant sense of discovery around every corner.

Of course, no trip for Walter would be complete without time on the water. Fishing in the Pacific Ocean aboard a fantastic vessel was a highlight. “Offshore fishing is one of my favorite pastimes,” Walter says, “and being able to chase sailfish in Panama was unforgettable.”

Tips for Fellow Travelers
For neighbors thinking about making Panama their next destination, Walter has plenty of recommendations. “This country may be the size of Rhode Island, but it offers everything—bustling metropolitan areas, mountains, beaches, and rainforests,” he explains. “You could easily explore coast to coast in a week or two.”

Among his must-see stops: the downtown area of Panama City, the bustling fish market for authentic local flavor, the rainforest, and, of course, the Panama Canal. And if you’re adventurous? “Go offshore fishing,” he insists. “It’s a blast!”

Weather and When to Go
Walter visited in June and notes that while the weather was pleasant with a constant breeze, it’s important to keep in mind that summer is Panama’s rainy season. “It rains most days, so plan your trip accordingly,” he advises.

Looking back, the trip was more than just a vacation—it was an unexpected gift. “Being able to share this experience with one of my oldest friends made it even more special,” Walter reflects. From fishing and friendship to history and discovery, Panama proved to be a destination full of surprises, and one Walter would recommend to anyone looking for a mix of adventure, culture, and natural beauty.
