Roots Pediatric Dentistry

Where small smiles come to grow.

When it comes to caring for children’s smiles, few places in Acadiana carry a history as deep as Roots Pediatric Dentistry. For more than 45 years, this practice has been a trusted dental home for local families — serving children whose parents, and even grandparents, once sat in the very same chairs. Today, under the leadership of Dr. Adrienne Reviere Harst and Dr. Evan Tatford, Roots is writing a new chapter while honoring the tradition that began decades ago.

Dr. Harst, originally from Eunice, first joined the practice in 2019 after completing her pediatric dentistry residency. Just three years later, she purchased the office from Dr. John Hendry and Associates and reintroduced it as Roots Pediatric Dentistry—a name that reflects both the multi-generational ties and the sense of community the practice represents. That same year, Dr. Tatford, a Lafayette native, returned home after residency training to join the team. With two board-certified pediatric dentists leading the practice, Roots offers a unique combination of advanced expertise and hometown heart.

Board certification is a distinction not every pediatric dentist pursues, but it is one that sets Roots apart. After completing their dental training at LSU School of Dentistry, both doctors completed additional training and rigorous exams to ensure they provide the highest level of specialty care–Dr. Harst at Indiana University/Riley Hospital for Children and Dr. Tatford at University of Tennessee/LeBonheur Children’s Hospital. This means parents can feel confident knowing their children are in the hands of true experts—whether it’s a baby’s very first visit, a teenager’s checkup, or more complex needs requiring sedation or hospital dentistry.

While expertise is important, the team at Roots believes what truly matters is the experience children have when they walk through the door. They know many kids—and their parents—come with dental anxiety. That’s why every detail of the office is designed to be welcoming, gentle, and fun. The staff works hard to make sure visits are positive so children don’t just tolerate the dentist but actually look forward to coming back. As Dr. Harst likes to say, “Our goal is to help kids grow into adults who love their smiles and aren’t afraid of the dentist.”

One of the biggest educational missions for Roots is raising awareness about the importance of the first dental visit. Both the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend that children see a dentist by their first birthday or when their first tooth appears. Early visits not only help prevent problems but also set the stage for healthy habits and lasting trust. At Roots, these milestone appointments are filled with guidance for parents and gentle introductions for children—ensuring families feel supported right from the start.

Beyond the exam room, Roots Pediatric Dentistry is deeply connected to Lafayette life. Dr. Harst is an active member of the Junior League of Lafayette, and the practice proudly sponsors many community programs. Dr. Tatford, who grew up surrounded by a large Lafayette family, is equally committed to giving back and is often spotted at UL sporting events. Both doctors are also parents themselves—Dr. Harst and her husband have two children with another on the way, while Dr. Tatford and his wife are raising three daughters in town. These shared experiences as parents and neighbors give the practice a genuine understanding of the families they serve.

Recognition from the community has followed. In 2024 and 2025, Roots Pediatric Dentistry was honored as the number one practice in its field by Acadiana’s Choice Awards, a reflection of the trust families place in their care. But for Dr. Harst and Dr. Tatford, the real reward is seeing generations of smiles—the toddler sitting in the chair today whose mother and grandmother were once patients themselves.

Whether you’re new to Lafayette or a lifelong resident, Roots Pediatric Dentistry invites you to become part of their story. From baby’s first tooth to the teenage years, they’re here to ensure every child grows up with a healthy, confident smile.
