From Gators to Glaciers: Ellie’s Unforgettable Alaskan Cruise
Ellie Quackenbos traded Louisiana heat for cool mountain air, whale sightings, and waterfalls galore on a family adventure through the Pacific Northwest and Alaska—complete with king crab, glacier calving, and a surprise log chair win at a lumberjack show!
Where did you travel?
I went with my family and my cousins on an Alaskan cruise! We boarded the boat in Seattle and stopped in Skagway, Ketchikan, and Juneau, Alaska. We also sailed through Glacier Bay where we saw a glacier calving. We stayed in Seattle for two days before our cruise left. We got to go up the Space Needle and tour the Chihuly Garden and Glass Museum. We went on a beautiful hike to see the Snoqualmie Waterfall.
What inspired you to go there?
My mom really likes the mountains and waterfalls, so she and my dad surprised us with a trip to Alaska! She wanted us to know what it is like to be in an environment that is unlike Louisiana.
What did you do there?
In Juneau, we went fishing for salmon and rockfish, and the fish were delicious! Whenever we stopped in Skagway, we went to a restaurant and got a two-pound king crab leg that was bigger than my arm! We also rode the White Pass Railroad through the mountains, and a tour guide took us to see lots of waterfalls and the Yukon Suspension Bridge in Canada. In Ketchikan, my dad and Uncle Roger drove us around in zodiac boats where we saw sea lions and lots of eagles! We also went to a lumberjack show where my little brother Fletcher won a lumberjack log chair. It was hilarious!
What did you enjoy most and why?
I really enjoyed the waterfalls. At the bottom of one of the really big ones was a tiny stream where I was able to collect some pretty rocks to take home. My favorite thing about the cruise was the new friends I made in the kids' club and the room service!
Recommendations for your neighbors if they travel there?
I recommend that everyone in this entire neighborhood should go to Alaska one day because it is never hot there, and the whole entire state is just so beautiful. And when you are on a cruise ship, make sure you keep an eye out for breaching whales. I saw one and it was super cool!
I hope you all visit the beautiful Pacific Northwest very soon!
