Small Boxes, Big Impact
Riverlights residents are building on five years of generosity as they prepare to pack 900 Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes this November.
Operation Christmas Child is a project of Samaritan’s Purse that distributes shoebox-sized gifts to children around the world. These boxes are filled with toys, school supplies, hygiene items and other gifts that bring children joy and hope. For many recipients, it may be the first time they have ever received a gift or owned something brand-new. The boxes are collected from communities throughout the United States and other English-speaking countries.
Since 2021, Riverlights has fostered an active and growing community dedicated to packing shoeboxes. We began with a small group of friends and packed approximately 100 shoeboxes that first year. Since then, our Facebook group, Riverlights Neighbors Packing OCC Shoeboxes, has grown to include more than 250 families.
Beginning in 2022, we have held our annual packing party at the Lakehouse each November. With every passing year, both community participation and the number of completed shoeboxes have increased. We packed 300 boxes in 2022, 450 in 2023, 700 in 2024 and 800 last year. Our goal for this year is 900 shoeboxes.
The effort is led by a team of eight women from our neighborhood who spend much of the year planning and working on Operation Christmas Child. From making jump ropes and bracelets to collecting school supplies and stuffed animals, each woman shares a passion for creating meaningful gifts and making the packing party a memorable experience for everyone who participates.
But it is the Riverlights community that truly makes this enormous undertaking possible. Without the generous donations of time, money and supplies from our neighbors, the event would not be what it is today. Fewer children would receive shoeboxes filled with joy and hope.
Time and again, our neighbors provide everything we request and more. Some donate funds for soccer balls, which we purchase in bulk to secure a better price. Others buy large quantities of school supplies when they go on sale at Walmart and Target. Every contribution helps us fill another box for a child.
If you would like to become part of this passionate and dedicated community, we would love to have you join us. The best way to stay up to date is by following the Riverlights Neighbors Packing OCC Shoeboxes Facebook page.
This year’s packing party will be held November 17 beginning at 5:30 p.m. Keep an eye on our Facebook page for additional details and opportunities to get involved.
