A Yard Full of Flags, A Heart Full of Pride
As our nation celebrates 250 years of independence, I’ve found myself reflecting on what patriotism looks like in everyday life. For me, it’s often found in the simplest moments - neighbors waving from golf carts, children riding bikes down Main Street, families gathering for community events, and streets lined with American flags.
A few years ago, when I first became a REALTOR®, people would often ask why I chose real estate. The answer was simple: RiverTown.
When my family moved here, I quickly realized this wasn’t just a place where people lived. It was a place where people thrived. RiverTown offered something I hadn’t experienced before - a lifestyle where your home isn’t simply where you end your workday, but where you look forward to spending your evenings, weekends, and making memories with family and friends.
I loved this community so much that I wanted to find a way to give back while also introducing myself as a local real estate professional. That’s when the idea for “Flag My Yard” was born.
The concept was simple. Residents could sign up online, and before the Fourth of July, I would visit their homes and place American flags throughout their yards. Along with the flags, families received a patriotic scavenger hunt for the kids, information about the history of our nation’s flag, and tips on proper flag care.
What started as a small project with about 50 homes quickly grew into something much bigger. Last year, more than 125 families participated, resulting in hundreds upon hundreds of flags displayed throughout our neighborhoods.
Now, let me tell you - the reality of placing more than 500 flags throughout RiverTown in the Florida summer heat is no small task! Thankfully, I’ve had the opportunity to enlist the help of some hardworking local students over the years, turning the project into a true community effort.
But the work has always been worth it.
Every year, my favorite part isn’t placing the flags - it’s seeing the reactions. I love waking up to photos and social media posts from families surprised by their patriotic displays. I love cruising through the neighborhood in my golf cart and seeing entire streets transformed by thousands of waving flags. Most of all, I love being reminded of the pride people have in both our country and our community.
This year, however, Flag My Yard is taking a different shape.
Hallowes Cove Academy Cheer is hosting its own flag fundraiser, and rather than competing with a wonderful effort that benefits local students, I’ve decided to support it. Instead of organizing my own installation, I’ll be sponsoring flags through the cheer team’s fundraiser and sharing them as a small token of appreciation for past clients, supporters, and friends who have supported my business over the years.
Sometimes giving back means starting something new. Other times, it means stepping aside and supporting others who are carrying the torch forward.
As we celebrate America’s 250th birthday, I’m grateful not only for the freedoms we enjoy as a nation, but also for communities like RiverTown that remind us what connection, service, and pride in where we live truly look like.
Happy Independence Day, RiverTown!
