The Plot Twist Was Purpose

Behind every cover, podcast, and bold idea is a creative partnership built on trust, vision, and a whole lot of caffeine.

Certain people walk into your life and instantly feel like part of the blueprint. The kind of people who slide into your world and suddenly make it impossible to remember what life looked like before they were there. That is Sarah.

If you know Stroll Riverview, chances are you already know her work, even if you do not realize it. The covers that make you pause before opening your mailbox. The families laughing in a way that feels effortless. The business owners who suddenly look like magazine covers themselves. The videos. The branding shoots. The podcast plans. The neighborhood stories. Sarah’s fingerprints are all over them in the most beautiful way possible.

But here is the plot twist: Sarah Larae Gilliam was not supposed to end up here. At least not according to the original plan. Sarah is a Chattanooga girl with what she calls “a plot twist of a résumé.” She walked out of pharmacy school with a PharmD and all the things people spend years chasing: stability, security, and success. Fresh out of school at just twenty-three years old, she had done everything right. But inside, something felt off.

She says her creative brain was starving. She could not imagine spending the next forty years sitting in front of a hospital computer. Somewhere between exhaustion and daydreaming about what else might exist, she picked up a camera. And everything literally clicked. Now, if you know Sarah, that sentence somehow makes perfect sense.

What started as filling her own cup became Sarah Larae Photography in 2014 and eventually grew into SL Creative, where she helps businesses show up online like the powerhouses they already are. And if you think she simply swapped careers and rode off into creative sunshine, let me stop you right there. For seven years, Sarah lived a schedule that sounds almost impossible: forty hours each week at the hospital and another twenty to forty hours building her business. Weekend shifts. Nearly every Saturday shooting weddings. I am tired just typing that. But that season built something in her. Running at that pace forced Sarah to become obsessed with systems, strategy, and efficiency. The funny thing is, those skills eventually became the secret ingredient. Sarah realized the exact systems she needed to survive were the same things business owners desperately needed too. That realization became SL Creative.

And here is where I tell you what makes Sarah different. She is not just creative. Creative people are everywhere. Sarah is creative and strategic.
Visual. Strategic. Personal. Those are the three words she uses to describe her business. She approaches photography and branding with the same analytical mind she once used in healthcare. Strategy first. Pretty second. She notices things most people miss. She sees details before anyone else does. She can build a content plan while simultaneously deciding where the light hits best and somehow also talking someone through feeling awkward in front of a camera. Which, by the way, is one of her superpowers.

Every time Sarah delivers a gallery, whether it is a wedding, a family session, a senior shoot, or a branding session, she talks about the joy of helping people feel empowered in their own skin. That part matters. Because she is not just taking pictures. She is helping people see themselves differently. And honestly, I know firsthand what that feels like.

Sarah has become so much more than our photographer. She is my creative counterpart. The other half of the brainstorming sessions. The “What if we tried this?!” texts. The Build Your Brand events. The Riverview Unfiltered dreams. The giant ideas scribbled on napkins that somehow turn into reality.

She co-hosts Build Your Brand with myself and Dr. David Banks, and now that vision is growing into an intensive for entrepreneurs ready to level up their businesses.

Outside of all the business brilliance, Sarah’s crew includes her husband and five dogs. Yes, five. Including her beloved long-haired dachshunds that she says perfectly represent her personality: loyal, a little chaotic, stubborn, funny, and fearless. Honestly, that tracks.

What I love most is that Sarah shares herself openly. The polished moments and the messy ones. The strategy and the behind-the-scenes reality. She believes momentum beats perfection and tells people to start before they are ready.

I think that is why people trust her. Because she is not pretending. She is showing up. And Riverview is better because she does. Because behind so much of Stroll Riverview’s creative heartbeat, there is Sarah. Camera in hand. Barefoot half the time. Five dogs nearby. Dreaming up the next big thing. And lucky for me, I get a front-row seat.

Ready to connect with Sarah? Whether you need family photos, branding that actually feels like you, content creation, or help showing up online with confidence, Sarah is your girl.
